Herman Schwanz, age 100, of Wall Lake, IA, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.

Herman Louis Schwanz was born on December 26, 1910, to parents George and Hilda (Garrels) Schwanz in Lake View, IA. They lived in Lake View until moving to the farm in 1926. He attended grade school at Jackson Township, Crawford County through the eighth grade. Herman was united in marriage to Freda Rostermundt on October 9, 1935, in Carroll, IA. To this union four sons were born: Albert, James, Glen, and Larry. Herman was remarried to Violet Warrington Koenck on March 22, 1951, and his family expanded to include step-children: Lloyd, Vernon, Betty, Norma and Raynard.

Herman made a living for his family as a farmer and loved to work with horses until his retirement in September of 1980. He then enjoyed spending time fishing, playing cards, and attending community events. Some of his special memories included a Farm Festival helicopter ride, birthday parties, joining neighbors for 5 p.m. cocktails, and being a Co-Grand Marshal for the Farm Festival parade. Another great accomplishment was his ability to live in his own home for 100 years, while retaining the ability to drive and remain independent. He will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include sons: Albert (Linda) Schwanz of Lake View, IA, Glen (special friend Dee Bigge) Schwanz of Omaha, NE, Larry (Kathleen) Schwanz of Breda, IA; step children: Lloyd (Trudy) Koenck of Yorba Linda, CA, Betty Zimmer of Kiron, IA, Raynard (Jean) Koenck of Deloit, IA; daughters-in-law: Jan Schwanz of Storm Lake, IA, Colleen Schwanz of Sioux City, IA, and Joleen Schwanz of Odebolt, IA; step daughters-in-law: Mary Lou Koenck of Wall Lake, IA, and Lorraine Koenck of Lake City, IA; step son-in-law Gerald Fineran of Denison, IA; seven grandchildren; 30 step grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 76 step great-grandchildren; and 47 step great great-grandchildren; brother William Schwanz of Wall Lake, IA; nephews: Eugene (Carmen) Schwanz of Wall Lake, IA, and Kenny Schwanz of Wall Lake, IA; great nieces, great-nephews, and many other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Violet in 1991; his parents George and Hilda; son James; step-son Vernon Koenck; step-daughter Norma Fineran; step son-in-law Don Zimmer; three great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; one step granddaughter; two step great-granddaughters; and friend Jenny Warrington.
