Lake City – Glenn McCuen, 81, died Thursday, December 24, 2009 at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City.

A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City with Rev. Betty Weidert officiating.
Burial will be in the Lake City Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Glenn is survived by his son, Dennis McCuen of Lake City; daughters, Cynthia Walters of Sergeant Bluff, and Sharon Larsen of Lake View; grandchildren, Ryan (Nicole) Larsen, Adam (Jenny) Larsen, Kurt Larsen, Dr. Jacy Clarke and Derek (Julia) Walters; great-grandchildren, Koltin and Kristin Larsen, Evan and Sawyer Larsen, Aidan and Zachary Clarke, and Kyler Walters; and brother, Robert (Donna) McCuen of Carter Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Cecil and Paul McCuen and sister, Helen Daiker.

Glenn Warren McCuen was born February 21, 1928, at Lake City, Iowa to Lloyd and Ina (Farr) McCuen. He served in the United States Army Air Corp. He owned McCuen Plumbing and Heating; served as Lake City Chief of Police; worked for the Lake City Schools until his retirement; and was a long-time member of the Lake City Fire Department for many years. He was a member of the Lake City V.F.W. Post #1899, and the American Legion Post #31.

Harold M. Bartlett, age 87, of Wall Lake, passed away Saturday at St. Anthony's Regional Hospital in Carroll, IA. Harold Michael Bartlett was born on January 21, 1922, in Vail, IA, to parents George and Sadie (Shupitor) Bartlett. He grew up near Crawford County and attended school at Jackson Country School #9 until the 8th grade. Harold then went to work on the family farm until he enlisted in the Army in 1946. He was stationed in New Foundland and achieved the rank of Corporal before his honorable discharge in 1947. He was a member of the American Legion Chalon Post #262 in Wall Lake.


After returning to the U.S., Harold met Mavis June Lange and they were united in marriage on March 19, 1948, at the Presbyterian Church in Carroll, IA. From this union two children were born, Merlin and Marsha. They belonged to Trinity Presbyterian Church in Wall Lake, where Harold served as an elder. He also was an active member of the Wall Lake Fire Department for 39 years serving as secretary/treasurer for the majority of that time.


Harold farmed in the Wall Lake area until 1959 when he and Mavis moved into Wall Lake. He worked for Sac County in road maintenance until his retirement. Before and after retirement Harold worked part-time at the Lakewood Ballroom as a bartender, also for Pittman Construction helping with snow removal, and Albrecht Feed and Grain driving truck. He liked to spend his free time fishing and playing cards. He also enjoyed joking with family, especially his girls. He will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved him.


Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years Mavis, son Merlin (Marlou) Bartlett, Chula Vista, CA; daughter Marsha (Robert) Bornhorst, Wall Lake, IA; grandchildren: Angela (Fred) Richey, Terra Haute, IN, Mark, Michael, and Ashley Bartlett, Chula Vista, CA, Nicky (Tyson) Wessel, Lakemoor, IL, Matt (fiance Jenny Eriksen) Bornhorst, Overland Park, KS; step-grandchildren: Robert Bornhorst Jr. and Scott Bornhorst, New Orleans, LA; four great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Leon Pudenz, Carroll, IA; sister-in-law Lavona Bartlett, Wall Lake, IA; aunt Kurl Krohn, Segoville, TX, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.


Preceded in death by his parents George and Sadie; brothers: Robert, Vyrl, and George; and sister Norma Jean Pudenz.

Sheldon Book, age 84, of Odebolt, passed away December 26, 2009, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, IA.


Sheldon Lavern Book was born on March 29,1925, in Shelby County, IA, to parents Vincent and Helga (Jensen) Book. He was baptized in Avoca Lutheran Church at the age of ten, and was confirmed in the Manning Lutheran Church with Reverend Ansorgy. Sheldon enlisted into the Army in 1949 and served our country for 2 years. Sheldon worked at the Audubon Creamery east of Irwin for 26 years, and also farmed his dad’s farm in Grey, IA for two years. He then moved on to Portland, Oregon and worked for North West Natural Gas Company for 31 years.


In 1950, Sheldon married Velma Breining and to this union one daughter was born, Cynthia Hope. Sheldon was blessed with two grandchildren: Aleta Neher and Corrina Westfall; and one great grandchild Zoe Neher. In 1968, Sheldon married Clara Clark from Nevada. She passed away on Dec. 4,1999. Sheldon then moved to Iowa in 2000 to be near his sister Ruby and brother Lloyd. In February he rented a house in Odebolt from John and Cindy Davis, and in November he moved to Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Odebolt. His hobbies were going to senior citizens dances, fishing for catfish, playing cards and enjoying pie at Ruby’s house. He will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved him.


Those left to cherish his memories are two granddaughters: Aleta Neher and Corrina Westfall; one great-grandchild Zoe Neher; two sisters: Ruby Lorenzen of Odebolt and Pearl (Bob) Tasone of Portland, OR; two brothers: Lloyd (Karen) Book of Denison, IA, and Ron (Monica) Book of Marsing, ID; special friend Janis Boock of Battle Creek, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.


Preceded in death by his parents: Helga and Vincent Book; wife Clara; daughter Cynthia Hope Westfall; one brother Virgil; and sisters: Garnet and Opal.

Marian I. Jenkins, age 88, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.


Marian Cook was born at home on a farm south of Odebolt, on October 7, 1921, the seventh of twelve children born to Floyd Milton and Carrie Margret (Simon) Cook. She was baptized at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt and graduated from Odebolt High School in 1938. During her high school years, Marian was honored with an all state basketball player award.


On May 22, 1941, Marian was united in marriage to George A. Jenkins at Wall Lake. They made their home in Sac City. This union was blessed with four sons: Charles, James, David “Tony”, and Bill. She was employed as a phone operator for four years, worked at Seymour Egg Company for three years, and Nobles Manufacturing in the drill room and welding room for 21 years. She retired in January of 1977. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City, V.F.W. Auxiliary, and Friendship Club.


George and Marian enjoyed fishing and camping, spending weekends at Okoboji, and after retiring, spending the summers in Canada trying to catch the big ones. Marian was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones fan, listening to one basketball game on the radio while watching another on television. She was a great cook, known for her homemade rolls, enjoyed playing cards, and knitted slippers for many to enjoy. But more than anything else, she treasured the time with family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Her eyes would light up when she heard the magical words, “Family is Coming!”


Survivors include her three sons: Chuck (Jan) Jenkins of Shell Lake, WI, Jim (Barb) Jenkins of Ida Grove, and Bill (Sue) Jenkins of Brookings, OR; daughter-in-law Rita Jenkins of Sac City; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and four brothers and sisters: Richard Cook of Wall Lake, Betty (Bill) Blum of Wall Lake, Midge Hawks of Sac City, and John (Velma) Cook of McCook Lake, SD; many nieces and nephews; extended family members; and friends. Marian was preceded in death by her parents; husband George in August of 1985; five brothers: Lawrence, Harry, Roy, Clifford and Robert; two sisters: Florence Biesch and Bernadyne Kelly; and a son Tony Jenkins on May 4, 2009.

Mary Hungate, 53, of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2009, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Mary was born on March 19, 1956, in Lake City, Iowa, the daughter of Eugene Paul and Louise Estelle (Jacobson) Olberding. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s in Auburn. She lived in the town of Auburn then moved to Grant City, attending St. Mary’s Catholic School in Auburn and graduating from Lake View-Auburn High School where she competed in the girls State Basketball Tournaments.


Mary and Robert Miller celebrated 25 years together. She was a wonderful dedicated mother to her children; remembering the births of all her grandchildren brought her great joy. A devoted housewife and house-mom, Mary was the best and will be deeply missed. She enjoyed sewing and knitting blankets for her grandchildren, loved to go fishing, and was delighted to be able to attended her daughters wedding.


Survivors include her husband Robert; mother Louise Olberding of Grant City; sons: Chad Hungate and wife Charlena of Grandview, MO, and Jeremy Hungate of Olathe, KS; daughter Sandra DeSart and husband Jeff of Lanesboro, IA; and grandchildren: Cydni Hungate, Cheyenne Hungate, Christopher Larson, Joshua DeSart, and Spencer Hungate. Other survivors include her sisters: Sue (Dick) Lasher of Altoona, Micki (Randy) Kohorst of Okoboji; Sharon (Roger) Menke of Bonaparte, and Gloria (Dave) Jones of Woodstock, GA; many nieces and nephews and extended family.


Mary was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Olberding; brother Michael Olberding; and grandparents.
