Herbert Rasmussen, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa died April 12, 2010 at the Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.
Herbert Dale Rasmussen, son of Neils and Roseale (Leopold) Rasmussen was born April 6, 1928 in Cherokee, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Cherokee Lutheran Church. Herb attended Cherokee County rural schools for his elementary education and graduated in 1947 from Aurelia High School.

Herb was employed and then in 1951 he joined the United States Army. While in the United States Army, he trained at Fort Riley and Fort Sam Houston. Herb served as a medic in the Korean War and was awarded many metals of honor. Herb was honorably discharged in December of 1952 and then attended Chillicothe Business College for one year in Missouri.

On July 16, 1955, Herb was united in marriage to Patricia Keller at the Lutheran Church in Aurelia, Iowa. Together they were blessed with three daughters: Lori, Lisa and Stacey.

Herb was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa, a member of the Elk’s Lodge, the VWF and American Legion Post. Farming was a huge part of Herb’s life. He especially enjoyed tending his cattle/calf herd. Herb had a strong work ethic. The family made many memories while helping Herb put in and take out the crops, bale hay and walk beans, where there was always time for “just one more round” before dinner!! Herb’s family cherishes some of his favorite one-liners, “SAVE”, “BEHAVE”, and “Where’s Patsy Big-Deal?”

Herb and Pat enjoyed spending many winters in Texas. There, they spent time dancing at Pepe’s, socializing with friends and volunteering at local schools. They enjoyed retirement in Storm Lake, boating on the lake and relaxing at their home.

In his final two years, he resided at the Buena Vista Manor, where he developed an extended family with the staff. We are very thankful to them, for their genuine care and compassion.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Pat of Storm Lake; his daughters: Lori Droegmiller of Dakota Dunes; Lisa and her husband Steve Hathaway of Kingsley; Stacey and her husband Roger Tiefenthaler of Early, his grandchildren: Adam Droegmiller and Abby Droegmiller; Christina Macklem; Nicholas Morgan; Adam, Sarah, Laura, Michael, David and Anna Tiefenthaler; 10 great-grandchildren; his cousin, Fritz and wife Rita Rasmussen of Denmark; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Letter to the Editor - Reader Defends Aquatic Center Installation

Curtis
I was one of the "out of touch idiots" ten years ago that responded to a vote to fund an aquatic center. A vote that passed by 86%. The action was in response to a need identified by the community. Cost of center was app 1.3 million, 750,00 of which was bonded , the rest was donated by the community.

The center will never be self supporting but if run more effectively with emphasis on volume the deficit would be decreased. Government response to deficits is to raise taxes or charges, very seldom do they reacte with expense cuts and increased volume. Citizens should come forth with positive ideas to improve the bottom line. Marketing the center should a top priority.

Respectfully,
Sally Lines

Sac City, Iowa lost nearly 10% of it's population this decade...and other (not so) fun facts

I was doing research last night, and was reminded of this website and thought I'd share.

http://www.city-data.com/city/Sac-City-Iowa.html

There are not tons of surprises in this report. I didn't expect the population to be in such steep decline, and I was kind of taken aback by making 2 of the "Top 101" lists you kind of want to stay off of.

The populating is getting older, so median income has gone up, no surprise. In addition, because the population is aging, the number of women are starting pull ahead of to outpace the number of men. I guess this is the place to be if you are having a hard time getting a date and dig mature widows.

The estimated number of people in poverty has gone way way down from the Horizon's rough claim of 50ish% three years ago. I guess one sure way to decrease poverty is to live in a community with very few substantial jobs so that the poor people are forced to move somewhere else. ;)

Interesting reading, for a listing of data.
