October 17, 2011 – Sac City, Iowa

Education Spotlight is intended to keep the public and the school board abreast of what is going on in the classrooms of East Sac County Schools. This month’s presentation is by Larissa Ruptnow and is entitled, “Understanding by Design”, a concept based teaching and learning form that starts at what the teachers want students to know, and then works backwards from there to design a curriculum…
“Concept Based Teaching”, a type of teaching that focuses on timeless concepts instead of topics was also reviewed.

ESC Cross Country Team show the results of full season of improvement at Orange City State Qualifying meet
October 20, 2011 - Orange City, Iowa
We traveled to Orange City for our state qualifying meet this afternoon. As expected the district was loaded with very talented runners and we failed to qualify anyone for state.
Girls
Lydia Anderson 17:48 37th
Lauren Goodenow 18:05 45th
Morgan Wolleson 18:07 46th
Liz Halbur 18:48 58th
We ran without Emily today due to a hip injury. Lydia went out very hard to lead our team. She is coming back from a bad ankle injury but still posted a season best time for us. Lauren ended her career on a high note. She set a PR with a great effort today. Morgan in her third race of the year ran a tremendous second half of the race and was able to lower her PR also. The fast pace of the district got to Liz in the middle of the race but she was able to push through for a good finish and she also set a PR. I am truly proud of this girls team. They have battled injuries all year but still came back to finish the year strong.
Boys
Cory Carlyle 18:18 41st
Kelly Nutt 18:51 54th
James Pobanz 19:22 62nd
Colin Haberl 20:31 70th
Hunter Pieken 20:56 74th
Our boys came to this meet ready to run. Cory went out hard hoping to earn a place at the state meet. He left everything on the course but ended up a little short today. Kelly ended his carrer with a hard earned PR. James went out hard also hoping to earn a stete spot but the pace was a little too fast today and he struggled late in the race. He was able to finish hard with a good time. Colin and Hunter both ran hard and moved up throught the race. Both finsihed the season with new PR's. I think some of our boys where disappointed today but they all ran hard and improved all year. This is a very young team and will get better next year. They should all be proud of their accomplishments this year.
