Just minutes ago it was confirmed that Sac City Councilor Jim Johnston has accepted the position of Sac City Water Plant Superintendent. According to Sac City Administrator Adam Ledford, Johnston is tentatively set to begin on August 15, 2011. Ledford said that he is expecting Johnston's letter of resignation from the Sac City Council today or tomorrow.

Edward “Ed” Hutchinson, age 66, of Lytton, IA, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2011, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Ed was born on May 9, 1945, in Sac City to Adah Mae Hutchinson Bauer and his step-father Lawrence “Bud” Bauer. He resided with his grandparents Joe and Eva (Cheney) Hutchinson in Sac City and attended Sac City School.

On March 13, 1965, Ed was united in marriage to Janet June Jarvis in Sac City. This union was blessed with three children: Jody, Susan, and Jennifer. Ed was an owner-operator truck driver for over 21 years and due to health reasons, quit trucking and opened Hutch’s Café in 1990 on the East edge of Sac City. It soon became famous for its burgers and friendly atmosphere. He will be missed by many.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; son Jody (Patti) Hutchinson of Sac City; daughters: Susan (Victor Lockwood) Starnes of Lytton and Jennifer (Brent) Johnson of Parkersburg; grandchildren: Tony (Jennifer) Hutchinson of Lemoore, CA, Jeremy Hutchinson of Sac City, Andrew Hutchinson of Rockwell City, Blake, Jenna and Rylee Starnes of Lytton, Chelsea, Cody, Collin and Charity Johnson of Parkersburg and Zack and Hanna Jastorff of Sac City; great-grandchildren: Tori Hutchinson of Sac City, Alyssa, Miya and Jaycob Hutchinson of Lemoore, CA and Xander Starnes of Lytton. Other survivors include his mother Adah Bauer of Spirit Lake; sisters: Jean Ann (Max) Orth of Sac City, Kathy (Mike) Harmelink of Cherokee, Ruthie (Jim) Tendal of Superior, IA, and Peggy (Steve) Levi of Spirit Lake; brothers: Jim (Annie) Bauer of Lake Park, IA, Larry (Elaine) Bauer of Marshall, MN and Gary Bauer of Spirit Lake; and many extended family members.

Ed was preceded in death by his stepfather Lawrence “Bud” Bauer, grandparents Eva and Joe Hutchinson, father-in-law Lawrence Jarvis and mother-in-law Dorothy Jarvis.

Ruby Katherine Shull, age 92, of Sac City, IA, died August 6, 2011, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City. Ruby was born April 8, 1919, in Sac City, IA, the daughter of Harry and Jesse Penniman. Growing up, Ruby attended Sac Community School where she graduated.

On August 7, 1941, Ruby married Edward Shanks at Ida Grove, IA. They were blessed with two children, Harry and Nancy Shanks. Edward passed away suddenly in 1945. On November 6, 1948, Ruby married Robert Shull in Blair, NE. They lived in Sac City. They were blessed with children: John and the twins Robert and Richard.

Ruby enjoyed cooking, gardening, dancing, crafts and playing cards. She was active in the First Christian Church. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was treasured by her family. Ruby will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband: Bob Shull of Sac City; children: Harry Shanks of Wall Lake, John Shull (Bonnie) of Florence, AZ, Robert Shull (Rebecca) of Lytton, and Richard Shull (Karen) of Sac City; her grandchildren: John Shanks of Omaha, David Shanks (Beth) of Florida, Ben Shanks (Donna) of Auburn, Sarah Segebart (Andy) of Carroll, Brenda Lawson of Garland, TX, Randy Bartels of Rockwell City, Ross Leonard of Lytton, and Blake Shull (Amy) of Sac City; 14 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Iola Eldridge and Leota Olson; her first husband Edward; daughter Nancy Bartels; daughter-in-law Mary Shanks; grandson Michael Shanks; and granddaughter Jennie Shull.
