Juanita F. Schuknecht, age 89, of Sac City, IA, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, IA. Juanita Fern Schnell was born to parents Edward and Nellie (Schade) Schnell on December 5, 1921, in Jackson Township, Sac City, IA. She was raised in the Sac County area and graduated from Sac Community High School with the class of 1940.

She married Eldred Schuknecht on April 15, 1945, and they welcomed three children: Nadine, Rita, and Lyle. She has been a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City, and was baptized into the Lutheran faith on November 30, 1930. She was confirmed May 14, 1939.

She made a loving home for her family as a farmwife and mother. She lived in Paullina for 14 years before returning to the family farm in Sac County for 17 years. She then lived in Sac City for 31 years before moving to Oak Terrace in 2007. She worked in the Sac County Treasurer’s office prior to her marriage, then she worked in the Paullina Bank. She also worked for Loring Hospital, Sac City Ag Center, and was a bookkeeper and church secretary. She enjoyed her St. Paul’s community and was a member of several card clubs. She cherished her grandchildren. Juanita will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her.

Those left to remember Juanita include children: Rita Jenkins of Sac City, IA, and Lyle (Linda) Schuknecht of Lake View, IA; grandchildren: Lance (Christy) Jenkins of Davenport, IA, Michael (Amber) Jenkins and son Dayton, of Sac City, IA, Kristen (Ben) Mather and children Dominic and Kenley of Cedar Falls, IA, and Lisa Schuknecht of Sioux City, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Nellie; daughter Nadine Schuknecht; and son-in-law Tony Jenkins.

Robert “Bob” Charles Schmidt, age 74, of Lake View, IA, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at his residence in Lake View. Bob was born on June 15, 1936, in Lake View, the son of Hans and Amanda (Hess) Schmidt. He was baptized and confirmed his faith at Emmanuel Lutheran Church where he remained a life-time member. He graduated from Lake View High School with the Class of 1954. On May 31, 1959, Bob and Josephine Quail were united in marriage at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with two sons, Kevin and Randy.

Bob was well known in the Lake View community as owner of Bob’s Market for over 25 years, retiring on March 1, 1998. He was mayor for seven years, served on the city council, and member and officer of the Lake View Commercial Club. In his younger years he taught Sunday school. Bob enjoyed fishing, model cars, watching the Cubs and the Bears, working on cross word puzzles, playing Euchre with the guys and poker with his relatives, and watching the activities on the lake. He was a loving and devoted husband and father and treasured his visits with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to celebrate his life include his wife Jo; sons Kevin Schmidt and wife Renae of Lake View and Randy Schmidt and wife Julie of Flossmoor, IL; grandchildren Stacy (Josh) Pritchard of Odebolt, Heidi (Alex) Koster of Des Moines, Kelli Schmidt of Lake View, Lena, Johnathon and Jason Schmidt of Flossmoor, IL; and great-grandchildren Josilynn and Addisyn Pritchard.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Amanda Schmidt.

Minutes of the May 17, 2011 Sac County Supervisors Meeting

The Sac County Board of Supervisors met in regular session with all members present, Jack Bensley, Chairman, presiding. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as submitted.

It was moved by stock and seconded by Hecht to amend the agenda to review a report from Trileaf. Ayes all, motion carried.

It was moved by Hecht and seconded by Stock to approve the agenda as amended. Ayes all, motion carried. Eric Mueggenberg with Trileaf Environmental Services submitted the third Post Remediation Site Monitoring report on the former Schultz property at 3rd and Main streets in Sac City. The report indicated the site would be reclassified from high risk to no action required after tests showed that the level of contaminates were below the required levels. The report will go the DNR for their approval.

It was moved by Hecht and seconded by Stock to direct the chairman to sign the site monitoring report stating no action is required. Ayes all, motion carried. The Board reviewed two proposals for replacing the fence around the exercise yard at the Sac County jail. Midwest Fence and Gate from Fort Dodge submitted two proposals; one with 12’ high fence with barbed obstacle wire on top for $8385.02 and one with a 12’ high fence with three strand barb wire for $7549.95. Des Moines Steel Fence Co. submitted one proposal for a 12’ high fence with three strand barb wire on top for $4890.00.

It was moved by Stock and seconded by Hecht to accept the low bid of $4890.00 from Des Moines Steel Fence. Ayes all, motion carried.

It was moved by Hecht and seconded by Stock to approve the master matrix, as recommended by Sherri Wilson, sanitarian, for the Raasch methane digester. Ayes all, motion carried.

It was moved by Stock and seconded by Hecht to approve the claims as listed on the claims register in the Auditor’s office. Ayes all, motion carried.

It was moved by Hecht and seconded by Stock to approve the drainage claims as submitted. Ayes all, motion carried.

It was moved by Hecht and seconded by Stock to approve application for liquor license renewal submitted by the Prairie Pedlar. Ayes all, motion carried.

It was moved by Hecht and seconded by Stock to acknowledge receipt of two applications for approval of construction across established drainage districts in Sac County. The new construction did not interfere with any tile lines in the districts of DD 34, 26, 27 and 92 or DD 58. Ayes all, motion carried. Lisa Bethune, Sac County CPC, discussed several issues with the Board regarding mental health services.

It was moved by Hecht and seconded by Stock to approve the community mental health center waiver request and contract for services with Counseling Services LLC. Ayes all, motion carried.

The County Engineer updated the Board on activities of the county road crews and the status of current maintenance and construction projects.

With there being no further business, on motion, the meeting was adjourned.

Russell Theodore Berkler went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, May 14, 2011, at Mount St Francis Nursing Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Russell was born in Truesdale, Iowa. He spent most of his life in Sioux City, Iowa, where he was the office manager of Chesterman Bottling Company. He then moved to Scottsbluff, Nebraska and was office manager of Panhandle Anesthesia Associates for eight years. He retired to Lake Wales, Florida. After the passing of his beloved wife Betty, he spent the last nine years of his life in Colorado Springs, Colorado, near a daughter and son-in-law.

Russell was preceded in death by his wife of over 59 years, Betty Jean Haradon Berkler, an infant son and an infant daughter, and a son-in-law, Kim Reidt. He is survived by his four daughters and husbands: Donna and Dr. Paul Considine of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Patricia and Keith Litterick of Middleburg, Florida, Connie and Dr. Charles Hornbaker of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Pamela Reidt of Wilbur, Washington. Russell is also survived by the joys of his life - 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He also leaves four sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Myra and Darwin Jones of Lytton, Iowa, Bernice Haradon Peterson of Marshfield, Wisconsin, Mary Haradon of Gaylesville, Alabama, and Darlene Berkler of Eldora, Iowa.

Russell was a man who loved the Lord, his church, his family and his many friends. He enjoyed watching various sports and was always up on current events in the world. He was a gentleman, a caring and involved father, and a dedicated husband. He blessed many people in his 93 years of life.
