Barbara Lou Harjes, age 86, of Sac City, IA, passed away Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Loring Hospital in Sac City. Barbara Lou Rhinehart was born June 17, 1924, to parents Ralph and Marion (Lee) Rhinehart in Ruthven, IA. She grew up living in Northwest Iowa including the Ruthven, Storm Lake, Fort Dodge, Spencer and Sheldon areas. She attended grade school in Spencer and Ruthven, and graduated from Storm Lake High School with the class of 1942.
On May 3, 1945 she married Orval M. Harjes in Fort Dodge, IA. They were blessed with three children: Karlina, Stephen, and Joann.
In addition to making a loving home for her family, Barbara worked in sales with JC Penney, and also with the Spencer and Sac City Community Schools lunch programs. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, knitting, dancing, and traveling. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She most recently lived at Park View Rehabilitation Center since September of 2010, and was recently recognized as Resident of the Month in January of 2011. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Karlina L. (Reverend Charles) Downing of Sac City, IA, Stephen J. Harjes of Sac City, and Joann L. (Steve) Reimers of Schaller, IA; grandchildren: Michael (Teresa) Downing of Odenville, AL, Melissa (James) Kestel of Schaller, IA, Kristina (Lee) Clark of St. Petersburg, FL, John Downing of Iowa City, IA, Shane Reimers of Sioux City, IA, Joseph Harjes of Ankeny, IA, Matthew Reimers of Ankeny, IA, and Andrew (Lindsay) Downing of Blaine, WA; great-grandchildren: Jacob Downing, Allison Kestel, Rebecca Kestel, Gabriel Downing, Ashley Kestel, Jordan Clark, Jackson Clark, Julia Clark, and Grace Downing; and many extended family members and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband Orval Harjes; her parents Ralph and Marion; brothers: Bruce and Grant Rhinehart; and sisters-in-law: Evalyn and Berneice Rhinehart.
