Director of Sac Community Center Presents Annual Report to the Sac City Council

SAC CITY, IOWA – FEBRUARY 14, 2011

Chelsea Bengford, the director of the Sac Community Center appeared before the Sac City Council on February 14, 2011 to present the annual Sac Community Center report.

According to Bengford, the Sac Community Center had a good year which included the replacement of the roof, new equipment for the exercise room, and a social media presence (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sac-Community-Center/124461154249651) with 130 “likes” on facebook.

2010 Sac Community Center Financial Information

Bengford characterized the year as “pretty good’ financially. She reminded the council that in 2010 they were still paying bills for the sidewalk repair that was carried over from 2009, and that even though the council authorized it, the center did not have to borrow money from its own building demolition fund to keep the doors open.

On the financial downside, membership was down and the fees from that endeavor were correspondingly low. The pool also needed a lot more work than in previous years and that was costly.

Bengford trumpeted the success of the various new activities the center is providing to the community including the 3 on 3 basketball tournament, youth roller-skating, the Ironman triathlon, the golf tournament, and the teen dance. According to Bengford, these items and the new after school program are activities she intends to continue.

Membership currently stands at 163. Last year at this time there were 166 memberships. Bengford characterized this as “pretty well on track.”

Bengford told the council that the number one goal for 2011 is to increase memberships. Towards this end, they are putting a very large ad in the Tri-County Reminder Special in an attempt to entice people from other communities to use the facility. She said that they will also be offering more programs and events.

Mayor Barb Powell, who vowed to save the community center in 2008 said that recently, she has received more feedback from people about in which type of events they wish to see the center engage . Powell relayed to the council that the recent series of basketball tournaments have been very successful money makers, and that the center hopes to grow those events to include teams from other communities.

Sac City Councilperson Bill Brenny said that he appreciates the work that the Sac Community Center does. Chelsea responded in kind saying that she appreciates the financial help the city provides each year.
