Passed Away - Burnice E. Mandernach

Burnice E. Mandernach
February 24, 1936 - February 7, 2010

Burnice E. Mandernach, age 73, of Sac City, Iowa, died Sunday, February 7, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sac City, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverends John J. McGuirk and Larry McCarty will officiate, with burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery, Sac City. Friends may call at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Sac City on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a Rosary Service.

Born February 24, 1936, in Wrenshall, Minnesota, Burnice Ellen Mandernach was the daughter of Howard and Lillian (Abbott) Davis. She grew up and received her education in Minnesota.

Burnice met Lloyd Mandernach, Sr. at a dance in Storm Lake. They were married on May 15, 1954, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sac City, and made their home in Sac City. The couple was blessed with six children, Linella, Lorri, Lloyd Jr., Lee, Larry, and Lance.

Burnice was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. In earlier years she taught religious education classes, and most recently was involved in the Altar Guild and on the Diocesan Appeal committee. She enjoyed dancing, facilitating the Ravishing Red Hatters, and tending her flowers and garden. Her greatest joy was found in her grandchildren and keeping up with their many activities.

Burnice worked at several Sac City businesses over the years and sold Avon products for more than 40 years. She enjoyed her job as an audiology technician at Hearing Unlimited.

Survivors include six children, Linella Mandernach of Sac City, Lorri (Mike) Thomsen of Bondurant, Lloyd (Joy) Mandernach, Jr. and Lee (Natalie) Mandernach, all of Sac City, Larry (Karen) Mandernach of Grimes, and Lance (Molli) Mandernach of Sac City; 12 grandchildren, Travis Long, Tristine Birk, Suzanne Pettit, Sara Winkelman, and Amanda, Michele, Derek, Grant, Caiden, Mara, Ally, and Brock Mandernach; six great-grandchildren, Grace and Garrison Winkelman, Cheyenne and Ava Pettit, Andrew Birk, and Lila Westphal; a brother, Marvin (Ramona) Davis of Lakeville, MN; two sisters, Luella Zimmer of Sac City, and Nelma (Ellis) Byriel of Lytton; 13 nieces and nephews; as well as many other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lloyd in 1986; and two sisters, Maxine Cook and Donnabell Kilpela.

Betty Woodke, age 84, of Schaller, Iowa, died Monday, February 8, 2010 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Storm Lake, Iowa.
Memorial service for Betty will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Schaller United Methodist Church. Honorary Bearers will be Scott Woodke, Tom Buck, Mark Murphy, John Woodke, Ryan Sawyer and Jake Sawyer.

Inurnment for her and Glenn, her beloved husband of sixty -six years, will be in the Schaller Cemetery during Popcorn Days, July 2010. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Woodke was born on February 24, 1925 to Cletus and Maude (Lawyer) Voyles-Boisen in Meridan, Iowa. She attended Storm Lake High School.

On September 6, 1942, Betty was united in marriage to Glenn Paul “G.P.” Woodke, in Yuma, Arizona. To this union, three children were born: Roxy Jeanne, Becky Rae and Scott Reed.

Over the years, Betty was an active member of Schaller United Methodist Church, a volunteer with the Family Hospice Respite Bereavement Center of Storm Lake, and a 50 year member of Order of Eastern Star. In addition to her work at Woodke Machine Shop doing the books and other management duties, Betty also was staff writer and editor of the Schaller Herald for many years.

Betty cherished time spent with family and friends. Some of her joys were dancing, movies and playing cards. She was fond of saying; ‘Glenn was the love of her life’ and ‘she found her true calling in life as a grandmother and great-grandmother’.

Those left to cherish her memory are: a sister Virginia Freeman of Fonda, IA; a half-brother Lonnie Voyles of Galt, CA; children: Roxy Buck and husband Tom of Schaller, IA, Becky Dolphin and husband Corky of Cascade, IA and Scott Woodke and wife Vilma of Schaller, IA; five Grandchildren: Nicolle Botcher and husband Steve of Alta, IA, Mark Murphy and wife Tracy of Johnston, IA, Glennda Woodke of Colorado Springs, CO, John Woodke and fiancé Taya of Colorado Springs, CO, and Kelly Murphy of Cedar Rapids, IA; four Great-Grandchildren: Ryan Sawyer, Jake Sawyer, Kayla Sawyer all of Alta, IA, and Nyah Rose Woodke of Colorado Springs, CO; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband Glenn; one brother: Lewis Voyles; one sister: Clara (Babe) Woodke-Grotjohn; three brothers-in-law: Frank Woodke, Wayne Freeman, Vernon Grotjohn; and one sister-in-law: Micky Voyles.

Violet Seagren Groth, age 85, of Newell, Iowa passed away on February 5, 2010 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.
Violet Helen Carlson was born on July 2, 1924 in Fonda, Iowa to Clarence and Clara (Ohrtman) Carlson. Growing up, she was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. Violet attended school at Fonda Community where she graduated in 1941.

On February 8, 1948, Violet was united in marriage to Roger Seagren. Together they were blessed with three children: Linda, Nancy and Craig.

Violet had a passion for baking pies and sugar cookies. She enjoyed collecting antique dishes and playing cards. She treasured flower gardening and loved her flowers.

Following Roger’s death, Violet later married Edward Groth on January 27, 2007.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Edward Groth of Newell, Iowa; her children: Linda (Don) Darling of Winterset, Iowa; Nancy (Steve) Corkrean of Winterset, Iowa; Craig (Renea) Seagren of Storm Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren: Matthew (Mindy) Darling of Waukee, Iowa; Jason (Nicole) Darling of Winterset, Iowa; Jackie (Brian) Mahler of Sac City, Iowa; Janelle (Chris) Steinkamp of Grimes, Iowa; Jeff Corkrean of Des Moines, Iowa; Tim Seagren and friend Jill Burger of West Des Moines, Iowa; her great grandchildren: Easton and Avary Darling; Cora and Caroline Mahler; Cole Darling; Ellie Steinkamp; her sister, Marian Johnsen of Quimby, Iowa; her step children: Dennis (Elaine) Groth of Newell, Iowa; Joanne (Dennis) Christian of Panora, Iowa; her step grandchildren: Gary (Wendy) Groth of Fonda, Iowa; Dr. Douglas (Dr. Eva) Groth of Carthage, Illinois; Dr. Nicolle (Eric) Rubendall of Naperville, Illinois; Mandy (Trevor) Shannon of Burnsville, Minnesota; Jill (Curtis) Cunningham of Runnells, Iowa; her step great grandchildren: Michael and Trevor Groth; Trystin, Jack and Max Cunningham; Morgan Groth and Taryn Groth; extended family and friends.

Passed Away - Viola Harto

Viola Harto, age 86, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Richard Salcido will officiate, with burial in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday one hour prior to services.

Born August 9, 1923, in Sac County, Iowa, Viola Emma Harto was the daughter of Herman and Dorothea (Luckow) Burmeister. She was raised on the farm with her sister until the age of six, then moved with the family to Ulmer, Iowa. Viola went to country school through the eighth grade. She was baptized, confirmed, and later married, at Peace Lutheran Church in Ulmer. She was a homemaker and also worked at the creamery for a short time.

On March 23, 1952, Viola married Donald Harto in Ulmer. The couple made their home in Ida Grove where they became members of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Viola enjoyed participating in the Ladies Circle there and having coffee with her friends. She enjoyed craft projects, arranging artificial flowers, playing Bingo, and writing letters to family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994; her parents; and a sister, Iva Harto.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Roland Harto of Sycamore, IL; sisters-in-law, Mildred Schuett of Ida Grove, and Rosmond Williams of Oakdale, CA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Marjorie Haines Young, age 84, of Lake View, IA, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, IA.

Marjorie Lange was born to parents Charles and Alpha (Boyd) Lange on August 1, 1925, in Fort Madison, IA. She grew up in Fort Madison and graduated with the Fort Madison High School class of 1943. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith.

Marjorie was married to Darrell Haines on August 5, 1952, and their union was blessed with three children: Lee Ann, Donald, and Ronald. Marjorie made a loving home for her family and also worked as a telephone service technician for Contel Telephone in Knoxville, IA, until moving to Lake View, IA, in 1977. After Darrell’s death on February 12, 1972, she was fortunate to find love again in Jerome Young and they were united in marriage on June 9, 1978, in Newell, IA.

Together Jerome and Marjorie enjoyed a lifetime of travel, exploring Europe and enjoying many cruises. Their love of traveling took them on 16 different cruises including destinations such as the Panama Canal, Alaska, Mexico and the Caribbean. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: daughter Lee Ann (Phil) Davis of Moravia, IA; sons: Donald Haines of Bussey, IA, Ronald (Deb) Haines of Pella, IA; step-daughter Dr. Danette Jackson of Winterset, IA; and step-sons: Michael (Michele) Young of Savannah, GA, Curtis (Margo) Young of Stewartville, MN; grandchildren: Angie Ford, Mindy Conaway, Jeff, and Joe Loyd, Marshall and Kimberly Haines, Lange Haines, and Megan Maxwell; and great-grandchildren: Gable and Kylie Ford, Austin and Trevor Conaway, Brady and Carter Loyd, Tucker and Tess Loyd, Brody and Addison Haines, eight step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her two sisters-in-law: Helen Wall and Viola (Carroll) Wilson both of Donnellson, IA; three brothers-in-law: Robert (Pat) Young of Donnellson, IA; Linus (Jeanette) Young of Churchville, MD, and Fred (Judy) Young of Donnellson, IA; many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

Preceded in death by her first husband Darrell Haines; husband Jerome in October of 2009; her parents Charles and Alpha; granddaughter Dani Nicole Haines; grandson Donald Haines, II; and daughter-in-law Sandra Haines.
