Passed Away - Harvey Mackedanz

Harvey Mackedanz, age 88, of Sac City, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Faith Bible Church in Sac City, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Brian Krause will officiate, with inurnment to follow in Cedar Cemetery, rural Sac City, Iowa, with military honors by VFW Post 590 and American Legion Post 195. The family will greet friends at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.

Born April 10, 1923, in Litchfield, Minnesota, Harvey Herman Mackedanz was the son of Gus and Agnes Mackedanz. He grew up and received his education in Minnesota. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Harvey was united in marriage to Leona Blomker in 1941. The couple was blessed with four children, Yvonne, David, Jim, and Jody.

Harvey worked as a farmhand for many farmers in the Sac City and Lake View areas. In the early 1960's, he and Leona made their home in the Spencer, Iowa, area. In January of 2007, Harvey became a resident on Park View Care Center in Sac City. He enjoyed playing cards and being with people. Harvey always had a smile for everyone and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include four children, Yvonne (Gary) Wilson of Spencer, David (Jan) Mackedanz of Sac City, Jim (Kathy) Mackedanz of Dubuque, and Jody (Troy) Deskin of Sibley; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Donald Callberg of Litchfield, MN; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members; as well his family at Park View Care Center.

Harvey was preceded in death by his wife, Leona; his parents; a grandson, Tony; a great-grandson, Adam; three sisters, Geri Callberg, Ruthie Seig, and Leola Thomas; and two brothers-in-law, Lyle Thomas and Harvey Seig.

Donna Mae Barclay, age 86, of Odebolt, IA, passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2011, at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt.

Donna was born on April 21, 1925, in Odebolt the daughter of Miron E. and Hattie (Hostetter) Johnson. She grew up in Odebolt, graduating with the class of 1942 from Odebolt High School. Donna was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt.

On April 21, 1944, she was united in marriage to Aubrey “Red” Barclay in Missouri. She was a devoted and loving wife and enjoyed caring for her home. In later years she worked at the Odebolt State Bank, retiring in 1987. She loved to play bridge with her friends, enjoyed golf and bowling, and will be remembered as a good cook and great homemaker. She will be dearly missed by all.

Survivors include her sister Dorothy Johnson of Odebolt; brother Myron E. Johnson and wife Dorothy of Onawa, IA; nieces: Joyce Keele and husband Bob of Loveland, CO, Janet Mann and husband Terry of Castana, IA, and Judy Bahns and husband John of Brentwood, CO; extended family members and many friends.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Miron E. and Hattie Johnson, and husband, Aubrey “Red” Barclay.

Anita Jo Coon, long time art instructor, artist and musician, of Storm Lake, Iowa passed away on November 8, 2011, at BVRMC Hospice in Storm Lake after a 4 year illness with Pancreatic Cancer. Anita was born March 21, 1952, in Storm Lake. She was the daughter of Donald and Vivian (Gregersen) Toomer, of Nemaha, IA. She graduated from Crestland High School in 1970 and attended Drake University and then graduated from Buena Vista University in 1975, with a bachelor's degree in Art Education and Music Education. She married Jay Francis Coon of Early on March 3, 1973, at the United Methodist Church in Nemaha. She then attended Mankato State University where she received a Masters degree in Fine Arts.

During her college years she helped spearhead the Buena Vista Dozen and was active in musical theater and the visual arts. She taught high school art for 23 years at Crestland/ Schaller Crestland schools and taught 9 years at Storm Lake High School. She also did adjunct work for Buena Vista University. She received the outstanding secondary art educator award from the state Art Educators of Iowa in 1993. She presented art workshops locally and nationally.

She loved art, music, dance and theater; Anita participated in local community theater and was a member of the Chautauqua Dancers, Currier Carolers, Siouxland Master Chorale and Touch of Broadway. Anita operated a working art studio, “Studio Upstairs,” she was actively involved in solo and group exhibitions including A.R.T. She liked church music ministry where she served as choir director and cantor in the Catholic Church for many years.

Anita will forever be remembered by her devoted husband, Jay Coon of Storm Lake; son Joshua Coon, wife Christi, children Aubrey Grace and Ryan Evan of Mt. Juliet, TN; daughter Gabrielle Grooters, husband Scott, children Austin Jay and Maren Elizabeth of Spring Hill, TN; brother Greg Toomer of Early, IA, children Lisa, Mark, Erin, and John; sister Valerie Toomer and partner Nancy Manderfeld of Eden Prairie, MN, sister Jennifer Toomer Lasota, husband Randy and son Charles of Minnetonka, MN. Anita was preceded in death by her parents Donald and Vivian Toomer, along with her grandparents, Charles and Evelyn Toomer and Adolph and Marie Gregersen.

Anita touched the lives of many people with her beauty and grace. She maintained her blissful spirit all the way to the end. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Oncology & Hospice Programs.
