Passed Away - Rhoda C. Lewis

Rhoda C. Lewis
August 21, 1917 - January 19, 2010
Sac City, IA

Visitation: Tuesday, 4-8 pm January 26, 2010 at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Sac City.
Funeral Service: Wednesday, 10:30 am January 27, 2010 at First Christian Church, Sac City.
Interment: following service January 27, 2010 at Oakland Cemetery, Sac City.

Rhoda Caroline (Petersen) Lewis, age 92, of Sac City, passed away Tuesday, January 19th, 2009 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the home of her son, Robert Lewis.

Rhoda was born to Marius and Minnie (Nelsen) Petersen in Elk Horn, Iowa, on August 21, 1917. The family moved to Lake View, Iowa, when Rhoda was three. She attended school at Lake View. Rhoda married Robert H. Lewis of Sac City on November 19th, 1937 at the First Christian Church parsonage in Sac City. She and Bob were life long members of that church. They had two children, Nancy and Robert.

Rhoda was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her family always came first. This was shown through the tender care she gave her husband as she learned to do hemo-dialysis for Bob three times a week for 17 years. Rhoda and Bob spent their free time camping and fishing and usually had their grandsons, Gregg and Brian, with them. Bob passed away on June 5th, 1986.

Whenever family met together Grandma Rhoda would bring out the cards. There was always time for a few hands of 500 or pinochle. She also enjoyed Friday night prime rib with Nancy and Larry followed by a few hands of 500. This last year had been difficult for Rhoda as she had always been proud of her independence. Robert and Pat invited her to stay with them where she always had someone for cribbage or cards. Rhoda had six very good friends whom she joined several times a week for cards or bingo. She also had her very special coffee group with whom she shared time every morning.

Survivors include her daughter and husband, Nancy and Larry Domino and her son and his wife, Robert and Patricia Lewis. Rhoda didn’t have “in-laws”-- just her kids. Her grandchildren are Gregg and Lynda Domino, Brian and Shelly Domino, Scott and Lisa Lewis, Michele and Brian Schuldt, Adam and Heidi Lewis. Great grandchildren are Kyle and Caitlyn Domino, Michael and Joselin Domino, Marian and Ada Lewis and one great grandson, Chase Domino; her brother and wife, Forrest (Bud) and Dorothy Petersen, of Harlan, and her sisters-in-law and her husband, Beverly and Bill Duncan, Jan Lewis of Cedar Rapids, and Dilys Lewis of Napa, CA., many nieces and nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents, Mike and Minnie Petersen; her parents-in-law, Phillip and Ida Lewis; her brother Clarit Petersen, sister-in-law and husband, Irene and Everett Austin, brothers-in-law, Ted and Cliff Lewis, nephews Michael Petersen and Larry Austin. “Grandma Rhoda” will be missed.

Passed Away - Lucian J. Russell

Lucian J. Russell
February 27, 1925 - January 19, 2010
Sac City, IA

Memorial Service: Sunday, 2:00 pm, January 24, 2010 at United Methodist Church, Sac City, IA
Visitation: Sunday, one hour prior to service, 1:00 pm, January 24, 2010 at United Methodist Church, Sac City, IA

Lucian Jesse Russell, age 84, of Sac City, IA, died at Park View Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, following a courageous year long battle with cancer. Lucian was born February 27, 1925, in rural Sac County, IA, to the late Jesse LeRoy and Mattie Wells-Russell. Lucian attended Sac City High School and following his junior year (1943) enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve his country as the United States fought for our freedoms in World War II. Following basic training, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor where he attained the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class. On September 30, 1943, he was united in marriage to Marilyn J. Fluth in Sac City. To this union three sons were born: Greg, Gary, and Gene. In 1954, he and Marilyn began working the Fluth family farm in the north part of Sac County until Marilyn passed away in 1973. Lucian married Doris Lubeck in 1974 and retired from farming, moving to Sac City.

Following an honorable discharge from the Navy, Lucian began working as a meat cutter and carpenter. His older brother, Orville, pulled him off a roofing job one day and asked if would like to be a fuel delivery driver for Russell Oil Company. There were many residents in Sac County who not only knew Lucian as the friendly delivery man, but also as a friend who kept their home heating oil tank full. He never knew a stranger. Playing competitive softball in the late 40’s with his brothers Orville and Ivy, under the direction of their coach Dolph Peyton, generated many funny stories with vivid details as told to his sons in the last few days of his life. He recalls telling Coach Peyton he would have to miss a game due to his first child being born. Lucian recalls his coach telling him he could miss the game only if a substitute could be found!

Lucian was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Cantigny Post #195, and the V.F.W. Post 590. He enjoyed his life with Doris pulling their 5th wheel camper to Texas for several winters. During the Iowa summers, they camped many weekends in Iowa’s state parks. Lucian really loved the Sac County Country Club playing most every day with his favorite golf partner, Wes Cole. He and Doris have won several golf tournaments as a husband-wife team.

Lucian is survived by his wife, Doris; three sons: Greg (Kay) Russell, Camdenton, MO, Gary (Sue) Russell, Des Moines, IA, and Gene Russell, Ames, IA; three step-sons: Kim (Maureen) Lubeck, Panora, IA, David (LaDonna) Lubeck, Houston, TX, and Terry Lubeck, Storm Lake, IA; one step-daughter Jan (Frank) Popp, Newell, IA; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Marilyn; his parents Jesse and Mattie; two sisters: Louella Russell-Meyers and Dorothy Russell-Wagner; and five brothers: Earl, Ivy, Orville, Othel, and Norman Russell.

Perspective: Newspapers count 2002 households as 4004 readers.  I think that's a scam and believe that kind of decades long lie told us by our established newspapers is one of the core reasons people hate newspapers, BUT... that's how they do it.

I hope to beat the local chicken dinner announcement rags around here in unique readers without having to resort to that lie to prop me up.

I don't know... you think my sheer local numbers will ever surpass their estimated then doubled world wide numbers? Top of the heap right now in Sac County is the Sac Sun with a claim of 3,000ish readers (1,500ish snailpapers delivered)  have I already beat this?  Are there two people literally checking in from each household right now?

Funding not yet in place for N14 upgrade

Sac County Engineer Ron Haden attended the highway 20 association meeting on Friday
January 15, 2010. At that meeting he spoke with Iowa DOT District 3 Engineer Tony Lazarowicz and passed what he learned on to the Sac County Supervisors at their regular meeting on January 19, 2010.

Mr. Haden learned that the state intends to let the grading for the Highway 20 bypass for the
section between N28 and N14 IN 2010.

He also learned that the paving for the Highway 20 bypass between Highway 4 and N14 will be let in 2011 and is to be completed by the fall of 2012.

Lastly, they will be letting the grading from N14 to Early in 2010, with the paving to be let in 2012
hopefully ending with the completion and opening scheduled for the fall of 2013.

Mr. Haden noted that this all depends on "How funding continues to flow." Sac County Supervisor Rick Hecht remarked that he saw a report out of one of the Sioux City news outlets that suggested that the money would not be there and asked if it was Mr. Haden's impression that Mr. Lazarowicz felt differently. Mr. Haden's answer was that Lazarowicz did not say anything about the funding.

Mr. Haden remarked that there is another $3.2 million in stimulus money that is anticipated from the Federal Government. He said that if approved, that money could be applied towards the
Highway 20 bypass, but that he doesn't actually know what the possibilities will be until after he
meets with the Region XII Council of Governments to get a clarification. There is some confusion regarding the stimulus money and whether the project actually has to have people on the ground working, or if it merely needs to be under contract in order to qualify.

Mr. Haden also reported that funding has yet to be approved for upgrading N14 between the bypass and the highway currently named Highway 20.* The N14 upgrade could include a widening of the shoulders for the entire length of that section, and moving the centerline of at least a segment of that highway to the East which will require a complete reconstruction. Mr. Haden speculated that this easterly move is being contemplated to avoid having to purchase nearby property containing buildings.

*In Webster County, "Old 20" is now called "D20".
