According to a rumor being spread by at least one prominent participant in Sac City's civic organizations...

As you read the following piece, please keep in mind that it is not my intention to give the impression, nor do I personally believe that the rumors about the school principal's imminent firing were started at the official direction of Sac City, Iowa Chamber/Mainstreet. I apologize for any confusion using their organizations name in the title may have caused. Because I do not wish to continue to give that impression, I have made the editorial decision to change the title from "According to a rumor being spread by at least one prominent and long standing member of Sac City’s Chamber/Mainstreet organization…" to "According to a rumor being spread by at least one prominent participant in Sac City's civic organizations..."

…the East Sac County School Board was meeting this afternoon to fire Mike Fischer as the Wall Lake and Sac City Elementary School Principal. TheSacNews.com has ascertained that this was in fact, not true. According to records obtained via FOIA from East Sac County School, the board was meeting only to fire Fischer as a coach. There are no records currently in possession of TheSacNews.com that give credence to any of the harmful rumors that were spread in the lead up to this meeting.

The actual meeting itself, which convened at 4:30PM on June 8, 2011 lasted only a couple of minutes. There was no discussion, all members were present, and they voted unanimously via roll call to terminate Fischer’s coaching contract. According to records obtained from the school, this vote was in reaction to Fischer not voluntarily resigning.

Principal Mike Fischer is still the principal for the 2011-2012 school year at this time.

If you encounter a member of a Sac City, Iowa civic organization or pseudo governmental entity spreading rumors that on the surface are a good reason to be angry at East Sac County School, try to keep in mind that there is a good chance that these are people who, given their failures to look to the future needs of the Sac Community School in the 80’s, are merely resentful of the school’s current success. Dissention between communities of Sac City, Lake View, and Wall Lake, Iowa is probably one of their major goals, and they don’t seem to have any problem lying to achieve that end.

When you want the truth, you know where to find it. ;)

Charges against Mortensen to be dismissed

SAC CITY, IOWA - JUNE 8, 2011

Charges against Carolyn Mortensen for leaving the scene of an accident, will be dismissed, Ben Smith, Sac County Attorney, announced today. The charges were filed against Mortensen, 56, of Wall Lake following an incident in which a school bus struck and injured a seven-year-old Odebolt girl.

Smith noted "The Sac County Sheriff’s Office did an excellent job investigating this matter and the resulting criminal charges were certainly appropriate; however, the decision whether to pursue a criminal conviction rests solely with the county attorney.”

“It is our (Sac County Attorney’s Office) policy to consider the totality of the circumstances and make this decision based on common sense and fairness, rather than a bare application of law to facts,” Smith added.

Smith ended by stating “A one-size-fits-all approach to the law cannot account for a split second decision made in the midst of the chaos and confusion that followed the accident. The ends of justice would not be served by prosecuting someone who had zero criminal intent and who has dedicated her life to caring for and protecting children.”
