Passed Away - Richard Nees
Richard Nees, age 78, of Nemaha, Iowa, died Friday, February 11, 2011, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa, following a brief bout with cancer.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 14, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Dale Reiff will officiate. Visitation with the family present will be held Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Richard was born on May 21, 1932, the son of Carl and Josephine (Reiff) Nees. He grew up near Nemaha and graduated from Nemaha High School in 1950. He then entered the United States Army and was stationed in Germany for two years during the Korean War.
On September 20, 1955, Richard was united in marriage to Janet Platt at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early. The couple made their home near Early where Richard farmed until 1985. He then began his second career driving semi for Ellerbrock Trucking for twenty years. He became known as "Farmer."
Richard enjoyed his life of work, continuing to help his son David with his organic farming operation for the past five years. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, his cats, and weekly gambling trips to Sloan.
Survivors include four children, Jackie (Terry) Duffy of Sac City, Janelle (Todd) Kelly of Lake View, Molly (Tom) Meusburger of Belle Plaine, and David (Marla) Nees of Early; nine grandchildren, Carl (Janelle) Duffy, Carrie (Josh) Kephart, Lindi (Ryan) Dahm, Emily (Cody) Wright, Andrew Nees, Lauri Nees, Kyle Kuehler, and Zeke and Caleb Meusburger; and six great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Matthew Dahm, Morgan, Carter, and Haley Wright, and Cade Patrick Duffy. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Jerome Bruder of Long Prairie, MN; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Janet in 2007; his parents; a grandson, Patrick Duffy; a brother, Walt Nees; and four sisters, Isabelle Schmit, Viola Bruder, and Dorothy and Esther Nees in childhood.
