Interment: Following the lunch December 18, 2010 at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery, Storm Lake, Iowa

Mary Ann Heyl, age 93, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Fountain West Health Care Center in Des Moines.

Mary Ann Jarvis was born on April 18, 1917 at Sleepy Eye, Minnesota to William and Nellie (Mastler) Jarvis. They moved to Sac City where she attended school. She was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake and a member of First Christian Church in Sac City. Mary Ann was united in marriage to Roscoe Spurling. To this union six children were born: Bill, Jim, Bob, Kay, Marlene and Jean. Mary was a loving mom and grandmother who treasured her family and especially loved seeing all her grandchildren and their families. On August 3, 1970, Mary was united in marriage to George Heyl in South Sioux City, Iowa.

Mary had many personal interests which included planting her flowers and taking care of them, embroidering, and going to the casino on the bus with friends. Holidays were a special time for her as she loved cooking and spending time with the family. She also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds from her window.

Survivors include her children: Bill (Kip) Spurling of Sac City, Jim Spurling of Carlisle, IA, Bob (Pat) Spurling of Thousand Oaks, CA, Kay Carnine of Des Moines, Marlene Forester of Palatine, IL, and Jean (John) Cosby of North Ridge, CA; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; brothers: Vernon Jarvis of Rockwell City and Verlyn Jarvis of Sac City; sisters: Flossie Wulkow of Wall Lake and Velma McCullough of Storm Lake; and many extended family members.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Roscoe Spurling and George Heyl; sisters: Elizabeth Cretsinger, Hazel Patterson, Thelma Lietz, and infant sister Ruth Ann Jarvis; brothers: Bernard Jarvis and William Jarvis; and granddaughter Colleen Spurling.
