Marvin was born on December 27, 1915, at home in rural Crawford County, Iowa, the son of James and Bertha (Voss) Blessington. His love of farming started at a young age as his parents lived on several different farms in Sac County. He attended country school southwest of Wall Lake through the sixth grade. Being the 2nd oldest of eight kids, the two older boys had to stay home and help mom and dad on the farm.
On September 9, 1940, Marvin was united in marriage to Delores Jeanette Wright at the Presbyterian Church in Sac City. This union was blessed with two children: Gary and Linda. He was baptized June 27, 1948 and became a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Auburn all in the same day. Marvin loved farming and working with his horses. He retired in 2005 from farming but still enjoyed digging in the dirt. His hobbies included horses, dancing, playing cards, bowling, and teaching his grandkids about horses and how to dance. He was a charter member of the Lake View Saddle Club. He was also a member of the 1st Congregational United Church of Christ in Lake View and served as an elder and trustee in the Auburn church.
