Harry Borcherding, age 84, of Schaller, Iowa died November 24, 2010 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Harry Veryl Borcherding was born November 25, 1925, the son of Henry T. and Minnie (Grieme) Borcherding, near rural Aurelia, Iowa. He was baptized as an infant at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover, Iowa and later confirmed in 1939 at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Cook Township. When Harry was four years old the family moved to their farm near Schaller. Harry attended country school in Cook Township and later high school in Early where he graduated in 1943.

On March 3, 1945, Harry entered the United States Navy where he served his country aboard the USS Kankakee, covering much of the Pacific until he was honorably discharged on July 9, 1946. Following his discharge, he went to Electric Trade school in Chicago for one year. After he graduated, he worked electrical construction for two years.

On December 27, 1950, Harry was united in marriage to Ruth Haidsaik in Nelson, Nebraska. Together, they were blessed with three children: Janice, Gary and Keith. Soon after marriage, they started farming on Harry’s parent’s farm. Harry farmed for several years and worked in the stock yards at Wilson’s in Cherokee for 16 years. Harry also had an upholstery and woodworking shop which he ran for many years. In 1974, they moved to their new home in Schaller, Iowa.

Harry was a member of the VFW, HupTwo Squad and AAL. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller where he served as an Elder, Treasurer and Trustee for many years.

Harry enjoyed fishing, playing cards, puzzles, reading and woodworking. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Scottsdale, Arizona for many winters with his wife, Ruth. Harry loved his family and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ruth Borcherding of Schaller, Iowa; children: Janice (Donald) Barclay of Homer, Nebraska; Gary (Anne) Borcherding of Cherokee, Iowa; Keith (Norma) Borcherding of Manchester, Iowa; grandchildren: Heath Barclay; Evan (Samantha) Borcherding; Heather (Nick) Berning; Kory Borcherding; Janelle (Dustin) Nielson; Ivy Borcherding; Kristin Borcherding; great grandchildren, Drayden Nielson and Ben Berning; brother, Vernon (Jackie) Borcherding of Scottsdale, Arizona; sister, Eileen Johnson of Storm Lake, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jason Barclay; and brother-in-law, Mayford Johnson.
