Robert Weston Hemphill, age 91, of Odebolt, Iowa, died peacefully on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born on September 22, 1919 at home on the farm near Milford, Iowa, the son of Frank and Maryetta (Warburton) Hemphill. He attended school in Milford and graduated from Milford High School in 1937. After completing school Bob continued to farm with his father. On April 21, 1946, he married Alice Hanson, a teacher in the Arnolds Park School. They stayed in the Milford area for the next three years while Bob continued to farm. In the spring of 1949, they moved to the farm north of Odebolt, which was designated as a Century Farm in 2008. They lived there for forty years and raised their three children: Joan, Robert (Butch), and Ann.

Most of Bob’s life was spent raising purebred Angus cattle for breeding stock, something he cherished doing. Bob retired from farming in 1986. Showing horses, raising cattle, playing golf, and reading were some of his favorite things. Bob also loved playing cards and looked forward to every Tuesday when his bridge foursome got together. Most of all, Bob cherished his family and took great pleasure in being called Bob-O, the name given to him by his grandson. Sadly, Bob did not meet a special goal to see his great-grandson who is due to be born January 2011. Bob was a long-time member of the Iowa Angus Association, serving as a director for many years in the Denison Chapter. He was a past president of the Spring Lake Golf and Country Club and served on the Board of Trustees for the United Methodist Church in Odebolt.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, of 64 years: his children: Joan Blassengame Davis of Hampton, VA, Butch (Judy) Hemphill of Odebolt, IA, and Ann Hemphill of New Hope Village in Carroll, IA; grandson: Jared (Jill) Hemphill of Des Moines, IA; one great-grandchild expected in January; brother: Keith Hemphill of Milford, IA; sisters-in-law: Doris Hemphill of Spencer, IA, and JoAnn Baker of Sioux Falls, SD; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Maryetta Hemphill; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward and Ella Eliza Down Hanson; brothers: Dwight, Glenn, and Bill Hemphill; sisters-in-law: Lorelie, Mary, and Marguerite Hemphill; son-in-law: Jay Blassengame; nieces: Lois Ann Hemphill and Diane Guthrie.

The family thanks all the doctors and nurses who have cared for Bob the past four years and especially the caring staff at Horn Memorial Hospital for the care they provided Bob in his final days.
