William H. Schwanz, age 99, of Wall Lake, IA, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.

William was born October 28, 1912, near Herring, IA, to George and Hilda (Garrels) Schwanz. He was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake where he remained a lifelong member. He attended grade school at Jackson Township, Crawford County through eighth grade. William was inducted into the United States Army on March 6, 1942, and was honorably discharged on January 16, 1946. He served his country during WWII as a cook.

On September 25, 1946, William was united in marriage to Berniece Bahr at the Lutheran parsonage in Wall Lake. This union was blessed with two sons, Eugene and Kenneth. They made their home near Wall Lake where William farmed. He loved the farm life and enjoyed raising livestock. His family was always very important to him and he cherished the visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion in Wall Lake and loved playing cards with his friends.

Survivors include his sons: Eugene (Carman) Schwanz of Wall Lake and Kenneth Schwanz of Vail; his grandchildren and their families: Alison (Dan) Daleske of Ames and their son Preston; Aaron Schwanz of Vail; Aileen Schwanz of Vail; Chad Schwanz and his family Jerzee, Connor and Calvin; Casey (Jamie) Schwanz and their family Kyla and Kade; and Julie (John) Brincks of Grimes and their son Beckett; several nieces and nephews; and many extended family members.

William was preceded in death by his parents; wife Berniece on March 11, 2001; brother and his wife, Herman and Violet Schwanz; sister-in-law, Alice and Harry Karsten; and brothers-in-law, Herbert and Eleanor Bahr and Melvin and Verna Bahr.
