Elmer Arthur Tiefenthaler, age 90, of Early, IA, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at his residence. Elmer was born on October 6, 1921, in Breda, IA, the son of Jake and Mary (Derner) Tiefenthaler. He was baptized October 7, 1921, in Breda and attended Breda School through the eighth grade.

He was inducted into the United States Army July 5, 1943, serving his country during WWII. He was honorably discharged June 20, 1946, earning the rank of Private First Class and awarded the Purple Heart. Elmer married his true love, Rita M. Determan, on January 8, 1946, at Sacred Heart in Early. He followed his life’s dream, farming and providing a home for his family. They were blessed with four daughters, Jean, Joan, Marilyn and Cheri. Elmer retired from farming in 1995.

Elmer’s hobbies included farming, playing cards, gathering at the Legion, where he was a member, watching sports on television, especially baseball, and getting outdoors to mow the lawn. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother and will be missed by many.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters: Jean (Gary) Schiebel of Bellevue, NE, Joan Tiefenthaler of Early, Marilyn (Donald) Glasnapp of Beaver Lake, NE, and Cheri Wallace of Denver, CO; grandchildren: Dawne (John) Zagurski of Omaha, NE, Jason (Tasha) Schiebel of Springfield, NE, Melissa (Derek) Sybert of Bellevue, NE, Aaron Glasnapp of Bellevue, NE, and Matthew Glasnapp of Bellevue, NE; great-grandchildren: Conner and Chase Zagurski and Claire and Katelyn Schiebel. Other survivors include his brother Marvin Tiefenthaler of Early; sister Wilma Feilmeier of Early; sisters-in-law Donna Tiefenthaler of Early and Kay Determan of Wall Lake; nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; wife Rita M. Tiefenthaler; sisters: Irene and Alma Tiefenthaler; brothers: Urban, Lester, and Emery and his wife Lois; sister-in-law Rita L. Tiefenthaler; father and mother-in-law Bill and Mary Determan; and brother-in-law Urban Determan.
