…Sac County Engineer’s Report

SAC CITY, IOWA – MARCH 29, 2011

032911SCSDOC0005
On March 22, 2011 Kim Laursen appeared before the Sac County Supervisors to ask for assistance and regarding a bridge on 230th Street between sections 6 & 7 in Jackson Township that he used to use before it was reclassified to a weight limit of 20 tons rendering it not safely usable for his purposes. (It was formerly posted at a 23, 34, and 40 ton limit depending on vehicle type.)

At that time, the Sac County Engineer's office was instructed to research the issue to see what can could be done. At the March 29, 2011 Sac County Supervisors meeting, Ron Haden, the Sac County Engineer reported to the council that the bridge currently has eight inches of gravel on the bed and that if it is reduced to less than two inches of gravel, the former weight limits can be restored.

According to Haden, gravel on the road bed weighs the equivalent of an extra truck and led the state to reclassify the bridge. The supervisors instructed Haden to remove the gravel and to communicate that action to the DOT so that the weight restriction can be lifted.
