Hubert Laverne Perry was born on a farm north of Sac City on July 1, 1921. His early years were filled with helping his parents, Elvie Lawrence and Hettie Lillian (Bailey) Perry, on the family farm and attending Douglas No. 6 country school. After long arduous days of farm work, the family enjoyed many nights of entertainment at the Bingville Country Store. Tales of threshing bees, neighborhood gatherings, and family programs and entertainment are a testament to the strong farming community that worked and played together as they strove to earn a living from the land. Growing up on the farm and attending country school laid the foundation for a life-long love of farming and nature; working with neighbors in Douglas township cultivated a life-long love of helping everyone he met; attending the Galbraith Methodist Church lit the light of a life-long love of God.
Hubert met Loraine Manly at the Sac City Methodist Church, where his family attended after moving to a farm south of Sac City. Hubert and Florence Loraine were married on June 8, 1952, at the Methodist Church in Algona. The couple made their home in Sac City and had three children: Manly (who died in infancy), Barbara Louise (who died in infancy), and Bruce Lee.
After many years of farming, Hubert retired to work for the USDA. He was active in the Sac City United Methodist Church, serving as council president, Sunday school superintendant, and lay leader; twice served as Worshipful Master of Occidental Lodge, #178, AF&AM; served as Worthy Patron of Sac City Chapter #18, Order of the Eastern Star; spent many years as Rainbow Dad; and enjoyed several card clubs. He had a prodigious memory for genealogy and history, and enjoyed sharing recollections of nearly 90 years of Sac County history. He entered into eternal light on January 2, 2011 at Loring Hospital, Sac City.
Those who continue to cherish his memory include his wife, Loraine and son, Bruce (Sac City); sister Beulah Rose Hutchens (St. Cloud, MN); sisters-in-law Elva Murray (Sac City) and Betty (Tom) Andrews-Flaherty (Riverside, CA); niece Marva Jean Hutchens (Grand Rapids, MN); nephews Marvin (Marian) Hutchens (Brooklyn Park, MN), Marlin (Linda) Hutchens (Windermore, FL), and Marlowe (Kim) Hutchens (Brooklyn Park, MN); as well as great nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in the journey to light by his parents; infant children Manly and Barbara; brother Vernon; and brothers-in-law Warren Hutchens and Willard Manly.
