Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 19, 2010 at the 1st Congregational United Church of Christ in Lake View.
Interment: following the lunch August 19, 2010 at Ida Grove Cemetery.


Herbert (Herb) John Wiegel, age 88, passed away at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll on Saturday, August 14, 2010.


Herb was born in Ida County on May 17, 1922 to Frank and Rosa (Carstens) Wiegel. He was raised on the family farm near Ida Grove along with a sister and brother. He attended school in Ida Grove until the Ida Grove National Guard unit was inducted into the regular army on February 10, 1941, and later was awarded an honorary high school diploma by the authority of the 78th Iowa General Assembly. He served in the 109th Medical Battalion of the 34th Infantry Division (Red Bull) and was awarded two Bronze Stars and numerous campaign and theatre ribbons for his service as a combat medic during the North African and Italian campaigns.


Herb was united in marriage with Patricia Mae Conard on January 3, 1945 at her parents’ home in Ida Grove. Together they raised four children: Rebecca, Lonn and twins Feryle and Teryle. He farmed north of Lake View from 1947 through 1964 and subsequently ran a construction business, Wiegel Construction Company, in Lake View until his retirement.


He enjoyed dancing, camping, fishing, his fraternal organizations and men’s breakfast groups, watching sports, and time with family. He was a member of the 1st Congregational United Church of Christ, Eilert Auen American Legion Post No. 133, V.F.W. Post 6537, and the 34th Infantry Division Association.


Herb is survived by his beloved wife Patricia; daughter Rebecca Conard of Murfreesboro, TN; son Lonn Wiegel of North East, MD; daughter Feryle (Michael) Berkland of Lakeside, IA; grandchildren: Lonn Wiegel II, Stacie (Kori) Stoffregan, Wade (Amy) Wiegel, Shane (Susan) Wiegel, Shelly (Steve) Gray, Jay (Stephanie) Bromley, Angelia (Bobby) Williams, and Teryle J. Wiegel; 29 great-grandchildren; and some very special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lorraine (Wayne) Urban, brother Merlyn Wiegel, and son Teryle L. Wiegel.
