Crossroads of the Nation?

Editorial by Curtis Bloes

Of all of the towns that are going to be bypassed by US Highway 20, (only 2 months till we never have to go through Rockwell City again!) Early, Iowa alone is positioned to take advantage of the loss of a US highway through their town. They are the only town right on the bypass between Webster City and… actually Early will be at the place where the 4 lane will be stalling till about 2030ish. For the time being, travelers will be forced to get off the bypass just a couple of seconds away from the Crossroads Restaurant and Casey’s Convenience store. No such situation exists in at any other place in the county.

To sweeten the deal, Early is also singularly stationed to take advantage of annexing out to the bypass more cheaply than any other town. It’s not a matter of miles and millions of dollars… it’s just a matter of yards and hundreds of thousands.

Of all the tiny towns in Sac and Calhoun counties conned by powers acting on behalf of Sioux City , Waterloo, and Dubuque, Early alone is the town that might be able to actually see an immediate increase in their tax base, if they are brave enough to act decisively.

NOTE:
- The last word the Sac City annexation people put out is that Sac will be expanding to the east, in an area that isn’t even visible from the bypass… Maybe they’ll attract a gas station to Indian Village Corner and people will drive a couple of miles south from the bypass to use it. LOL
- Lytton annexing anywhere? Sure, that’ll happen.
- And did I mention that we never have to hit 4 miles of slowdown in Rockwell city ever again?

The only place in two counties that travelers will alight without a big fight to pull them in will be in Early, Iowa.

…and the Early City Council, though sober in their discussion, seem to realize that. The video’s audio quality is unfortunately pretty low due to the air-conditioner noise that it is almost impossible to escape in that room, but you are welcome to watch to the cautious beginnings of what may be an historic era for this little town whose claim to be the “Crossroads of the Nation” may soon have teeth.

Oh, and they also talked about the plan to put their water tower in the Lutheran Church parking lot, which, by the way, will be a very likely source of water for any businesses that may crop up around that final bypass exit.
