Passed Away - Alvera Arbegast

Alvera_Arbegast_photo_edited-1Alvera Arbegast, age 79, of Arthur, Iowa, died Thursday, October 13, 2011, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 17, 2011, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend David Hemann will officiate, with burial to follow in St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery, Odebolt, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be held at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt on Sunday from 1-5 p.m., with a Scripture Service at 2:00 p.m. and a Rosary at 4:45 p.m.

Born December 8, 1931, in Odebolt, Iowa, Alvera Marie Arbegast was one of twelve children born to Henry and Esther (Roeder) Lansink. She grew up on a farm southwest of Arthur where she attended country school, then transferred to St. Martin School in Odebolt, and graduated from Odebolt High School. After graduation, Alvera attended school in Illinois and Nebraska where she received her education in Multilith Operations. She was then employed at the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha where she did the printing for all the Schemmel Hotels. Following her marriage and raising her family, she was employed at Miller Printing and Publishing in Odebolt until her retirement.

Alvera was an active member of the St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt, where she served on the church council financial committee, the scholarship committee and the Ladies Guild. She also served on the Arthur Community Board.

She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens and did a lot of canning and freezing of vegetables for the family. Alvera also enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, embroidery work, and making flower arrangements and wedding flowers for whoever asked. But her biggest joy after retiring was traveling to visit and vacation with her family in all the states in which they lived. She also spent several winters in Texas with her daughters.

On June 13, 1952, Alvera married Stanley A. Arbegast of Arthur, Iowa, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. This union was blessed with 14 children: Gene (Rhonda) Arbegast of Tahachapi, CA, Jerry (Angie) Arbegast of Arthur, Marie (Darrell) Cook of San Angelo, TX, Joyce (Keith) Flink of Odebolt, Neil Arbegast of Ida Grove, Mary Lou Redenius of Arthur, Kay (Randy) Johnston of San Angelo, TX, Jodie Arbegast (deceased), Jim (Karen) Arbegast of Erie, CO, Paul Arbegast of Arthur, Judy (Mike) Hein of Morris, MN, Linda (Mark) Aschenbeck of Pipe Creek, TX, LaRae Rodriguez of Port Orchard, WA, and Brian (Julie) Arbegast of Vandenburg AFB, CA.

Survivors also include 28 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Merle (Dixie) Lansink, and Ronald (Betty) Lansink; five sisters, Bernadine (George) Meisinger, Helen (Marvin) Ludwig, Audrey (Lou) Hostert, Donna Mae (Leon) Kennebeck, and Catherine (Jack) Donavon; and two sisters-in-law, Loween (George) Lansink, and Alitta (Harold) Lansink.

Alvera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stanley; a son, Jodie; a sister, Marcella; and three brothers, Milford, George and Harold.
