Passed Away - Richard Swanson



Richard_Swanson_photoRichard Swanson, age 83, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Monday, March 7, 2011, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Mark Volkers officiated, with burial following in the Odebolt Cemetery. Military honors were conducted by Roose Post No. 313 of the American Legion. Friends called at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt, Iowa, on Thursday from 4-8 p.m., with the family present from 5-7 p.m. Memorials in Richard's name may be directed to the Odebolt Community Center.

Born May 30, 1927, in Oak Park, Illinois, Richard Carl Swanson was the son of Harry Carl and Linnea Matilda (Helrich) Swanson. Richard moved with his family as a young child to the Odebolt area in 1939. There he received his education until attending military school, graduating at the age of 17. Richard served in the United States Navy during World War II, then returned to Iowa where he graduated from the University of Iowa.

Richard worked with his father in the popcorn business until 1951, when his father retired. He then purchased what would become Swanson Insurance Agency in Odebolt, which he continued to operate until retiring in 1990.

In earlier years, Richard loved running, playing tennis, biking, and golfing. He enjoyed boating with his sister on the sailboat he owned in Rochester, New York. Richard taught Sunday school and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, and also belonged to Rotary and the American Legion. He was a 50-year member of the Shriner's.

Survivors include his brother-in-law, George Pearson of Webster, NY; and his nieces and nephews, Amy Pearson and Charlie Pearson, both of San Fransisco, CA, Barbara Horsefal of Fairport, NY, and Donald Pearson of Tulsa, OK. He is also survived by his business partner and family who grew very close to Richard in the 42 years they worked together, Howard and Marcia Hustedt of Odebolt and their six children, Regina (Michael) Pick of Omaha, NE, Bryce (Tammy) Hustedt of Odebolt, Steven (Diane) Hustedt of Ames, Tamara (Jeremy) Uhl of South Sioux City, NE, Matthew (Jenny) Hustedt of Omaha, NE, Kyle Hustedt of Chicago, IL, and their families.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carolyn Pearson
