Lake View City Council addressed by citizen upset about removal of Cottonwood trees
LAKE VIEW, IOWA – MARCH 7, 2011
According to Lake View, Iowa Mayor John Westergaard, several cottonwood trees by the west Stone Pier were removed because they were hit by lightning and had become unsafe. Said Westegaard, “The Council determined these trees to be a safety concern and decided that they should be removed.”
At the March 7, 2011 Lake View, Iowa City Council meeting, an unnamed citizen of stood and expressed her displeasure with the Council’s decision to cut down the those trees.
The woman, who was accompanied by a male companion, (pictured in video) read a prepared statement,a copy of which TSN was unable to obtain. Following is the actual audio of the reading of that statement.
Councilperson Steinkamp addressed her concerns, emphasizing that the council was concerned about both safety to the citizens, and the need to start the reseeding process as early as possible. He too seemed to share her concern about how long the trees had stood at that location, but indicated that the decision to remove those trees was based on both the damage that was done during a recent lighting strike, and X-Rays of the trees.
The citizen brought to the attention of the council trees at Denison Beach that have been hit by lightning and have not been removed, and then indicated that she thinks the council should think before cutting down the “old assets to our town.”
Mayor Westergaard thank her for taking the time to address the council.
The council took no further action.

I agree with Renae. Those trees were not only beautiful but provided much shade during the carnival. They are a part of Lake View's history- many pictures of local people have been taken in front of these two trees. I can only image the city's concern for safety of the citizens...*sarcasm* as near a busy place in town there is a huge limb *dangling* from a tree since last fall- the city is aware of it and said "they'd get to it" in the meantime I hope that people look up when they walk and watch out for it, the slightest breeze and its moving around up there. I am amazed at everyday that goes by and it hasn't fallen on someone or someone's vehicle.
ReplyDeleteI think the Mayor of Lake View thinks his name is Paul Bunyan Westergaard. Not that long ago a couple big evergreens were removed from the front of the Community Building.
