Thomas B. Kelley was born on May 5, 1931, to parents Walter and Clara (Thielen) Kelley in Harlan, IA. He grew up on a farm outside of Harlan and attended rural country school. He graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1949.
In June 1953 he married Sandra Frank at her parents home. To this union three boys were born: Jeff, Brian, and Todd. He was fortunate to find love again in Phyllis Schmidt-Lauridsen, and they were married in the Lutheran Church in July of 1999 in Audubon, IA.
Tom served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Upon being honorably discharged from the service he drove a school bus, farmed, and was the owner and operater of Harlan Feed Service until 1995. He maintained his trucking business “Kelley Trucking” until his retirement in 2004. At that time he and Phyllis moved their permanent residence from Audubon, IA, to Lake View, IA, and continued spending their summers on Black Hawk Lake and their winters in McAllen, TX. Tom loved to go dancing, golfing, fishing, and boating. He also had a love of horses. Some of his most special memories were spending time at his grandchildren’s activities.Tom Kelley, age 79, of Lake View, IA, formerly of Harlan, IA, passed away suddenly Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen, TX. He will be truly missed by all those that knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Phyllis; sons: Jeff (Debra) Kelley of Ida Grove, IA, Brian (Carol) Kelley of Eagle Grove, IA, and Todd (Stacey) Kelley of Harlan, IA; step-sons: Keith (Connie) Lauridsen of Norfolk, NE, and James (Julie) Lauridsen of Urbandale, IA; grandchildren: Kristin (Nathan) Boysen of Ida Grove, IA, Craig (Kayla) Kelley of Omaha, NE, Paul Kelley of Eagle Grove, IA, Patrick Kelley of Pella, IA, Marissa (Andrew) Bierl of Vandenberg AF Base, CA, and Erin Kelley of Harlan, IA; step-grandchildren: Jennifer and Brittany Lauridsen of Omaha, NE, and Loren and Leah Kane, and Dillon Lauridsen all of Urbandale, IA; great-grandchildren Colton and Carson Boysen; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents Walter and Clara, and his brother William Kelley.
