Dispute between Auburn City Council, Fire Department grows with pool filling fee
AUBURN, IOWA – JULY 12, 2010
Mayor Linda Beidler and Councilperson Dustin Mead jointly declared that the policy of charging residents would remain in effect . This came about as a result of the discovery that City Councilperson Josh Zimmerman had his swimming pool filled without paying for the water. Zimmerman submitted a $25.00 check to the city clerk at the July 12, 2010 meeting of the city council saying that he thought having the swimming pool filled was a perk of being a volunteer firefighter.
Things got heated during the meeting when Councilperson Justin Potthoff, the Auburn volunteer fire department’s safety officer, informed the council that the fire department would no longer be filling pools, prompting City Councilperson Cindy Finley suggest that the move was retaliatory.
Mayor Beidler declared that she would take the matter up with the fire department at the July 14, 2010 fire department meeting.
Other than the joint declaration, there was no vote. The policy of charging residents for filling pools is described as “A verbal agreement”
