Auburn City Councilperson Cindy Finley tells Mayor to ignore citizen, after yelling at him
AUBURN, IOWA – JULY 12, 2010
These are actual grown ups, folks. If I lived in Auburn, I would dust off the recall rules. These are not dignified people… much less leaders.
For the record, the council was ordered by the mayor not to engage citizens during the city council meeting. By this point in the meeting Councilors Potthoff and Finley had. Though not technically barred from engaging citizens, Mayor Beidler and the City Clerk Nancey Janssen had engaged citizens during the meeting also, making it 4/7s of the Auburn City Government that had so far violated the Mayor’s directive.

GROW UP PEOPLE, If you dont like the way the city runs things maybe YOU should MOVE !
ReplyDeleteAm I understanding this right? The mayor is no longer letting the public speak at the meetings? Or am I just reading this all completely wrong?
ReplyDeleteAmanda, as "easy" as that sounds, many small town governments are corrupt so your seemingly easy solution of moving does nothing. You'd move into another town with issues, albeit Auburn is by far on the extreme side of the spectrum. As far as the city running things how they want, there are a select few council members thinking they can bully others into doing things their way, whether it be good or bad for the citizens. Citizens need to start bucking up and questioning things, and now that they are, the city council don't like it and citizens are being silenced. Amanda, your choice to be involved or not in your local government but being ignorant is your choice. Don't bash others for taking notice. Kerstyn, your take on the matter is pretty much on target. They state they are allowing citizens to speak in the beginning of the meetings but only in statement form, council is not allowed to address the "statement", and they are restricted to 5 minutes on one issue. However, you can clearly see that rule is not consistent from citizen to citizen. Their "rule" is causing major conflict in the community.
