Shirley Simon, age 80, of Odebolt, Iowa, died unexpectedly Friday, May 14, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Memorial services were held 10 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Mark Volkers officiated, with burial in the Odebolt Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt.

Born November 24, 1929, in Ida Grove, Iowa, Shirley Anna Simon was the daughter of Floyd and Maddie (Thomas) Martin. She grew up and attended school in Ida Grove.

Shirley married August "Benny" Simon in 1948. The couple made their home in Odebolt and was blessed with five children, Pat, Mike, Sue, Gary, and Jeff. Benny passed away in 1974. Her oldest son, Pat, died June 29, 1965.

Shirley worked as owner/operator of Mom's Place in Odebolt for over ten years. In 1989, she moved near her sister Erma in Milford and provided in-home care in the Lakes Region. She retired in 2003, and returned to Odebolt.

Shirley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed word search puzzles and cross-stitching.

Survivors include four children, Mike (Liz) Simon of Odebolt, Sue Simon and special friend John Freese of Grundy Center, Gary (Nancy) Simon of Sutherland, and Jeff (Kathy) Simon of Council Bluffs; three grandchildren, Lindsay Simon and special friend Troy Werkmeister of Sutherland, August (A.J.) Simon of Sutherland, and James (J.P.) Simon of Council Bluffs; and two great-grandchildren, Ian and Owen Werkmeister. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Opal Simon of Lake View, and Mavis Simon of Odebolt; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

In addition to her husband and son, Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Erma Meyerdirk, Helen Wilcke, Doris Richardson, and Arlene Ehrig.
