Ruth E. Poen, age 97, of Lake View, IA, passed away Friday, April 29, 2011, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. Ruth was born July 20, 1913 near Auburn, IA, the daughter of John and Katherine (Peters) Spater. She was baptized and confirmed as a young girl at Zion Lutheran Church of Auburn by pastor E. A. Fritz.
Ruth graduated from Auburn High School with the class of 1932. After graduating she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA, and received her teaching certificate. She taught in the rural county schools of Carnarvon and Ulmer areas.
Ruth married William Poen on May 22, 1937, in Council Bluffs, IA. They were married for 67 years. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Robert, Wanda and Waunita. Ruth and Bill lived in the Ulmer vicinity for 31 years. Upon retiring, they made their home in Lake View. They were members of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View. Ruth enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, quilting, gardening and dancing.
Ruth is survived by her son Robert and wife Betty of Lake City; daughters Wanda and husband Robert Freese and Waunita and husband Robert Tegels, both of Lake View; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Iva Harmening; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bill; her parents John and Katherine; sisters: Genevieve Spater, Magdalaine Reaman and Clara Wenck; three brothers: Lester, Lawrence and Russell Spater.
