EARLY, IOWA – JANUARY 4, 2011
(from the minutes of the January 4, 2011 meeting)
“Jim Bullock, Sac County Emergency Management addressed some questions the Council had
about emergency shelters and Sheriff Ken McClure recommended the Fire Dept but together a
plan to accommodate stranded travels during winter storms when Highway 20 is closed. Councilor
Schumacher and Councilor Cougill felt as if the Fire Dept. could put this plan together.”
What does it mean when a county is declared a federal disaster area, and how is it determined?
How did the people in need of shelter end up at the school?
Some people were at Casey’s on Highway 71, which was closed. A Casey’s employee called Ellen Hartman who has the keys to the school. Ellen let the people in, and then momentum brought the rest of the people to the school.
What can we do in the future?
- Inform the stores and school what the plans are since they are the people the public has contact with.
- Put the names of the council and Mayor on the cable access channel to try to make people more aware of who is in charge.
- Put the plan into the newsletter.
