Mariette Josephine Carmean, age 85, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa.

Mariette Hanquet was born on May 25, 1925, in Liege, Belgium, to Joseph and Jeannie (Mathot) Hanquet. She grew up in Liege, where she graduated from high school. After graduating, she attended a nursing school in Liege for two years. Following her schooling, she worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

On August 18, 1945, Mariette was united in marriage to David Carmean. To this union five children were born: Joseph, Jeanne, Vicky, Jaqueline, and Michael. She worked at Loring Hospital and Park View Manor. She also sold Stanley Home Products beginning in 1956 until the time of her death. Mariette loved spending time with family, gardening, and knitting. She was an avid bird watcher and animal lover. She was affectionately known around the Sac City area as “The Worm Woman.”

Mariette was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women's Group, and the VFW Auxillary.

Survivors include her children: Joseph (Bernice) Carmean of Templeton, MA; Jeanne Nylen of West Des Moines, IA; Vicky (Duane) Clausen of Sac City, IA; Jaqueline (Terry) Heinrichs of Spencer, IA; and Michael (Michelle) Carmean of North Charlston, SC; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a sister-in-law: Joann Corderman of Sac City, IA. Mariette was preceded in death by her parents; brother Ferdnand Hanquet; and a son-in-law Link Nylen.
