#saccosupervisors set hearing for lowering number of voting precincts to as few as 3 precincts

Six years ago, Sac County was given a grant from the federal government to buy new voting computer equipment. This computer equipment would have cost the county over $200,000 had they purchased it themselves. The supervisors are concerned that the six year old computers, and the software that supports it, are nearing the end of their useful life. The cost of replacing that equipment “Really scares me”, said Supervisors Rick Hecht.

The cost of equipment coupled with concerns about the diminishing number of volunteer poll workers has lead the supervisors to consider either keeping nine precincts or contracting the number of precincts to few as three precincts with voting centers in Sac City, Lake View, and either Odebolt, Early or Schaller.

The official public hearing for consideration of precinct consolidation has been set for the evening of Wednesday September 7, 2011 at 7:00PM at the Sac County Courtroom. The Supervisors have committed to listing this discussion as an agenda item on their regular Tuesday meeting every week prior to the public hearing.
