ESC School Board meeting delves into question of elementary school building closure

It was suggested by an attendee of the August 1, 2011 ESC School Board Meeting that the school should close one of the elementary school buildings before raising taxes. The school board made it clear, though they didn't put it to a vote, that if a building was going to be closed down, it would be something that happened in the future.

During the discussion the main problem that was presented regarding which building to choose to close was that the Sac City building is much newer, but that the Wall Lake building serves more children.

To be very clear, the board wasn't having an active discussion in which they were trying to take a serious stab at trying to choose which building to close, it was just a mental exercise in reaction to a very good question/suggestion on the part of the public.

Though they took the suggestion seriously, and didn't indicate that the option to close a building was off the table forever, the ESC school board chose to move forward with putting a vote to the public on September 13, 2011 asking for the authority to raise taxes utilizing a combination of levying from property valuation and income surtax.
