Merlin Mueggenberg, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa died October 20, 2010 at Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa.
Merlin G. Mueggenberg, son of Bernard and Kathryn (Hatting) Mueggenberg, was born in Breda, Iowa, on February 3, 1923. He attended country school near Sac City.

During World War II, Merlin was inducted into the U.S. Army in May of 1943. He fought in Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. On April 6, 1945, Merlin was wounded in Germany during the Battle of the Bulge while serving with the 3rd Armored Division. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946, receiving three Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Purple Heart.

On January 17, 1949, Merlin was united in marriage to Delores Heebner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pomeroy, Iowa. This union was blessed with five children: Charles, Lucille, Nancy, Rita and Ann.

Merlin farmed for over 60 years. He was an active member of the community, serving on the B.V. Extension Council, the B.V. Fair Board, 4-H Leader of the Providence Peppy Farmers, the Alta V.F.W. and the Disabled American Veterans. In addition, Merlin enjoyed dancing and playing cards. He was a devoted and active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he took much pride in ushering.

Those left to cherish Merlin’s memory are his wife of 61 years, Delores Mueggenberg of Storm Lake; children: Charles (Marsha) Mueggenberg of Hamilton, Ohio; Lucille (Dan) Luedke of Flagstaff, Arizona; Nancy (Gaylerd) Sadusky of Storm Lake; Ann (Tom) Langenfeld of Iowa City, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; two brothers: Laverne (Bernice) Mueggenberg and Walter (Grace) Mueggenberg, both of Sac City; brother-in-law, John Alexa of Sac City; other extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rita, in 1995; sisters: Dorothy Cressler, Alvina Gesy and Leona Alexa.
