Jeanie (Jean) Birkhofer, age 89, of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, Iowa.

Jeanie Muirhead was born on December 1, 1920, in Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland, to William and Grace (Halbert) Muirhead. She grew up in Riccarton where she was baptized into the Presbyterian faith and acquired the Scottish level equivalent for graduation from high school. She worked in a carpet factory and then was conscripted to work in an ammunition factory during World War II. Following the war she returned to the carpet factory as a carpet inspector.

On August 6, 1947, Jean came to the United States with a brother and sister-in-law to stay with their sister. At this time she met her future husband, Donald Birkhofer, who was also the brother of her sister’s husband. They were united in marriage on December 12, 1949, at Grace Methodist Church in Schaller. They resided there until December of 1978. This union was blessed with a daughter, Segna. Jean was a devoted wife, mother, and friend who was always there to support her family. Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, and painting ceramic houses. She loved helping Segna make greeting cards.

In 1978, she and Donald moved to Wall Lake and joined the Wall Lake Methodist Church which then joined with the Lake View Methodist Church and became Lakes United Methodist Church. Jean was a member of the United Methodist Women, served as communion steward, and was a member of various church committees, over the years.

Survivors include her daughter, Segna Birkhofer of Sac City; sister-in-law Bethine Bowen of Bloomington, Illinois; nieces and nephews: Ricky and his wife Teri of Sioux City, Vicki Birkhofer of Sioux City, and Cathy Birkhofer of Sioux City; and many other nieces and nephews in the United States and Scotland. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald; four brothers; five sisters; parents-in-law Elmer and Alice Pearl Birkhofer; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
