Marie Baker, age 85, of Kansas City, and formerly of Schaller, Iowa died Saturday, September 11, 2010.
Marie was born on January 5, 1925 in Schaller, Iowa to parents John and Christine (Hansen) Box. Marie was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Schaller. She was raised in the Schaller area and attended school there.

On August 24, 1944, she was united in marriage to Irven E. Baker in Schaller. Shortly after the marriage, Irven was drafted into the Army and was killed in combat on Okinawa on June 10, 1945. Their daughter, Judy was born just 11 days before her father’s death. On September 22, 1946, Marie was united in marriage to Garnet (Jack) Baker in Schaller, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Dennis, Joanne, and Brian.

Jack, Marie and family made their home in Schaller where they farmed and later owned Baker’s CafĂ© for a number of years. Marie was a long-time member of the VFW Auxiliary in Schaller. In 1962 the family moved to Festus, Missouri and in 1973 moved to the Kansas City, Kansas area where Marie worked at Payless Cashway for many years.

After retiring, Marie had more time to stay involved with family and friends. She loved going dancing several times a week with friends. Marie loved spending time with her family and she especially loved playing with her grandchildren and was always amazed to see how much her family was growing, from grandchildren to great grandchildren. The memories of Marie as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother will always be remembered.

Marie, age 85 passed away on September 11, 2010 at Shawnee, KS from the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. Those left to cherish her memory include four children , Judy (Don) Meyer of Brookfield, WI, Dennis (Beverley) of Bloomsdale, MO, Joanne Cox of Crystal City, MO and Brian (Calista) of Kansas City, KS, and 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Edna Box of Schaller, Phyllis Box of Story City, IA and Helen Baker of Cherokee, IA plus several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Irven and Garnet, three brothers, Jesse, Robert and Earl Box all of Schaller.
