Junior “Ferd” Townsend was born on April 29, 1927, in Early to parents Ferdinand and Sarah (Tryon) Townsend. He lived in the Early area his entire youth. He served his country in WWII as a PFC in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1947. He became a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. Ferd married Eleanor Jane Fitzgerald at the Presbyterian Church in Early. They later renewed their vows at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early. Along with Ferd’s son, Terry, six children complete their family: Tim, Jim, Susan, Peggy, Linda, and Jody.

He worked hard to support his family as a laborer, putting in 21 years at Hygrade in Storm Lake before its closure in 1981. He then took to retirement and enjoyed his lifelong hobby of cheering on the Chicago Cubs and his Iowa Hawkeyes. He will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved him.
