Jennie was born on May 25, 1920 to Henry, Sr. and Hilka (Smit) Horst, in Holtheusen, Germany, where she was also baptized. When she was two, the family came over to the United States on a ship and settled near Herring, IA. Jennie attended the Levey Township Country School, where she learned to speak English, as German was the spoken language at home. After she completed country school, the family moved to Wall Lake, IA where Jennie was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church. She was employed as an in-home caregiver in Lake View, IA prior to marriage. On June 1, 1942, Jennie and Russell Reik were united in marriage at the Peace Lutheran parsonage in Wall Lake. They made their home five miles north of Odebolt where Russell farmed. They were blessed with six children. In 1967, they moved to the town of Odebolt where Jennie resided even after Russell's passing in 1999. She resided at Twilight Acres Nursing Home (assisted living) from September 2009 through July 2010. On August 6th, Jennie returned to her home in Odebolt with in-home care and resided there until the eve of September 5th when she was taken to Loring Hospital.

Jennie was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she served on the Altar Guild and flower committee, was a member of Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school. Jennie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Throughout her years, she enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and had a great love of flowers. She lived an active life bowling, dancing, traveling, fishing, and playing cards. In her later years, she enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and visiting with family and friends even up until her last hospitalization. Jennie had a great love for her family, with a special interest in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all.
