Passed Away - Donald Zimmerman



Donald Zimmerman, age 88, of Sac City, Iowa, died Friday, April 9, 2010, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Sac City, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Vicki Fisher will officiate, with burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery, Sac City. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 590 and American Legion Post 195. Friends may call at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Sac City on Monday from 4-8 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will resume at the funeral home on Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. and at the church one hour prior to services.

Born April 14, 1921, in Sac County, Iowa, Donald LaVern Zimmerman was the son of Herbert and Helen Marie (Barlow) Zimmerman. He grew up on the farm near Sac City, then furthered his education at Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids. Don served as a machinist in the United States Navy during World War II. He returned to Sac City following the war where he was employed as Director of Public Works for many years, retiring in 1983.

He married Phyllis Mooney on November 29, 1941, in Sac City. In 1946, Don built his own home where he and Phyllis raised their four children, Donna, David, Terry, and Tamera. The couple was later divorced.

On August 15, 1972, he was united in marriage to Sharon Gardiner at Elk Point, South Dakota. Don loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Don was a lifetime member of the Sac Gun Club and was honored as the Iowa Champion of Champions in shotgun trap shooting. He was very proud of his military service and enjoyed hunting, guns, fishing, and gardening. Many happy memories were made on numerous family camping trips to Minnesota.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; four children, Donna (Paul) Jesse of Storm Lake, David (Jean) Zimmerman of Emmetsburg, Terry (Kim) Zimmerman of Storm Lake, and Tamera (Douglas) Andersen of Cedar Falls; three step-children, Joyce (Charles) Epperson of Salem, MO, Elizabeth (J. Kelly) Laursen of Sac City, and Kenneth Earnest of Marshalltown; 10 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five brothers, Clifford "Cliff" Zimmerman of Sioux City, and John (Sandy) Zimmerman, Earl (Karen) Zimmerman, Charles "Chuck" (Joan) Zimmerman, and Theodore "Ted" (Alice) Zimmerman, all of Sac City; five sisters, Beulah (Wesley) Cole of Sac City, Florence Tatman of Maple Grove, MN, Ruth (James) Mason of Sac City, Mary (Dennis) Strodtman of Joliet, IL, and June (Kenneth) Janning of Carroll; a brother-in-law, Harlan Schade of Sac City; two sisters-in-law, Rita Zimmerman of Cherokee, and Jean Zimmerman of Kansas; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and a host of friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Pearl Bettin and Lois Schade; five brothers, Robert "Bud" Zimmerman, Kenneth "Kenny" Zimmerman, William "Bill" Zimmerman, Jack Zimmerman, and James in infancy; sisters-in-law, Neva Joan Zimmerman, Sharon L. Zimmerman, and Bonnie Zimmerman; brothers-in-law, Marvin "Pete" Peterson, Mahlon Tatman, and Glen Bettin; and by his first wife, Phyllis Zimmerman Bryant.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
