At the February 9, 2010 Sac County Supervisors Meeting, Supervisor Dean Stock imparted to the public that last week the Sac County Endowment board looked over the applications, scored them, and that the names of the entities that were awarded money should become public soon.
According Stock, they awarded $93,000 out of requests for about $160,000.
Mr. Stock said that there were many requests for playground equipment, which differs from years past when communities seemed to want money for signage but that they are "Keeping quiet" about this year's awards.
Basing his statements on historical documents kept by Director Shirley Phillips Mr. Stock said, "Sac City gets their fair share of the money." This apparently is because the city makes more applications for grants than anyone else does. Lake View historically comes in at the second highest amount granted, with Odebolt coming in third and Wall Lake in fourth. He also said, "Auburn does real good."
As an example of a request that failed, He talked about an organization that wanted to put on a one time meeting for people in the community to come together and talk about economic development. He said it, "...would be hard to accept an application like that, considering there's nothing permanent to it, it's just a one day even that is looking for funding."
Supervisor Rick Hecht, who didn't publically disclose how he was familiar with that particular example, but who seemed to be on the inside of that request said, "I would like to see the group reconsider, and I know it's difficult to ...pick and choose in those kinds of cases, but ...that sort of thing would be economic development which is SETD's [Sac Economic and Tourism Development's] charge."
Mr. Hecht continued, "I know some of the counties are taking a small percentage and are using it for that purpose and then maybe 70 or 80% for bricks and mortar."
Changing the subject Mr. Stock said, "This will be the 5th year that these have been out." He then continued, "I just wonder, as tight as money in the budget [is] if they'll cease to fund this, divert this money somewhere else."
