Hazel Elizabeth Ryan, age 75, of Lake View, IA, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2011, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. Hazel was born on January 14, 1936, in the family home in Wall Lake, IA, to Roy and Ester (Bonnichsen) Roth. She was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Wall Lake and graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1954. She worked in Omaha, after high school, as a secretary for Mutual of Omaha. She used to complain that she had to wear high heels everyday at work.

After her marriage on February 19, 1959 to Marion Ryan, she owned and operated restaurants in the area for more than 40 years. They were best known for owning Ryan’s East End in Lake View for 16 years. Hazel never really retired. After leaving the restaurant business she began working at Thistle Down Nursery at the check-out and got roped into doing everything else. When she wasn’t working she enjoyed gardening, reading, sitting on the “veranda” and vacationing in Mexico with friends. She loved dogs and while she didn’t have her own anymore she enjoyed dog sitting her “granddogs”. She loved her children and was looking forward to her first grandchild. She loved sports and said the only reason she went to high school was to play basketball. She cheered on the Dallas Cowboys and any Iowa State team.

She was always there when you needed her, even at three in the morning. Many of her friends she called family.

Survivors include her daughter, Pat Ryan of Mason City; son Jeffrey Ryan and wife Stacey of Lake View; brother Alvin Roth and wife Betty of Wall Lake; sister Betty Brotherton and husband Charles of Wall Lake; extended family members; and many friends. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marion; two sisters: Eva Mae Rieter and Ruth Bengford.
