Kathryn Rolf Hunstock Hicks, better known as “Kay,” age 90, of Storm Lake (formerly of Early, IA) passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. Kay, the daughter of Genevieve and George Rolf, was born on October 7, 1920, in Schaller, Iowa. She attended and graduated from rural Eden School #4 and then went on to high school in Schaller.

Growing up as the eldest of five children, she helped her parents with her two younger brothers and two sisters, even naming her youngest sister Joan. In August of 1938 Kay moved with her family to Sacramento, California. She married Joseph Hunstock on October 21, 1939, at St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral in Reno, Nevada; in 1942 they returned to the Hunstock farm in Early, Iowa, where Joe and his brother George farmed together until Joe’s death on May 13, 1966. Kay continued to live on the farm until 1987.

Kay married Donald Hicks on June 7, 1968, at Sacred Heart Church in Early, Iowa. Following Don’s death on October 23, 1986, Kay moved to a small house in Early. Although she had never before been a “saleswoman,” she continued with Don’s greeting card business for over ten years until well into her 70’s, traveling through Iowa and Nebraska to meet with customers. As those who met Kay can attest, she “never met a stranger” and could easily strike up a conversation with anyone. She was known for her story-telling, her deep and abiding faith in God, her work with Sacred Heart Church in Early, and her wisdom and non-judgmental approach to life. As a very active parishioner of Sacred Heart, she served as a CCD teacher for several years and was involved in volunteering for church suppers and other events for as long as she was physically able to do so. She was the President of the local Women’s Club for a year, learned to love golf during her marriage to Don, was an avid reader and gardener, and played 500 regularly with different groups. Although professing she “hated to cook,” the results did not demonstrate that, as her rhubarb pie, strawberry jam, pickled beets, fried chicken, and other specialties were always welcome treats. Her farm was often a haven for kids and various lucky children spent many happy hours playing there: Nancy Casey Cosby; Steve and Elizabeth Dahm; Anne McCoy; David, Gary, Kathy, Jennifer, and Michael Liske; Margaret, Theresa and Tom Struchen; Joe and Jennifer Hunstock, among others.

Kay’s survivors include her sister, Sister Genevra (Joan) Rolf, CSC, Salt Lake City, UT; sister-in-law Nadine Baker and family of Storm Lake, IA; step-daughter Julie and husband, Lee Masoian, of Edgewater, NJ; step-son Randy Hicks, San Francisco, CA; granddaughter Anne, her husband Brian and great-grandchildren, Taylor and Jake McCoy, Pullman, WA; nephew Jon Hunstock and wife Audrey of Ames, IA, and their children Joe (wife Danielle and children Madison and Isabela) of Austin, TX, and Jennifer (husband Doug Mengers), San Diego, CA; six nieces: Susan Veon, Berkeley, CA; Karen Iverson, Lakewood, WA; Nancy Veon, Sacramento, CA; Laurel Olin (husband John), Raleigh, NC; Victoria (Tori) Madsen (husband Peter), Hailey, ID; and Penny Castemagna (husband Gary), El Dorado Hills, CA; and five nephews: Jerome Rolf (wife Kathryn), Carmichael, CA; Timothy Rolf (wife Christine), Hailey, ID; Rich McCracken (wife Sue), Cameron Park, CA, and Terry McCracken (wife Christine), Sacramento, CA. In addition to her two husbands, Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Genevieve and George Rolf; her sister, Dorothy Veon, and her husband Walter; her brothers, Bill and Neil, and their wives, Norma and Beatrice, and nephew, James Rolf, and his wife Kerry.
