Shirley Ann Erickson, age 83, of Wall Lake, IA, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2011, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake. Shirley Ann Nuetzmann was born February 27, 1927, to Albert and Rosina (Weitzel) Nuetzmann in Wall Lake, IA. She was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake by Pastor Ad Schwidder and in 1941 renewed her baptismal vows there through the Rite of Confirmation under the instruction of Reverend Herbert Berner.

She received her elementary education at Clinton Township Rural School and graduated from the Lake View High School in 1943. She attended AIB College of Business in Des Moines, IA, graduating in 1945. Upon completing her education, she served as secretary for the George Dresselhuis Law Office in Odebolt. On September 7, 1947, she was united in marriage to Roland Erickson at Peace Lutheran Church by Reverend Alfred Christiansen. To this union four children were born: Allan, Keith, Marilyn, and Janet. They made their home on the family farm until 1977 when they moved into Wall Lake. Shirley retired in 1984.

Shirley was a lifetime member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, IA, where she served as office secretary for 21 years. She also served some time as church custodian. She held offices in the Ladies Aid and sang soprano in the church choir for many years. She and her husband Roland were also employed with Farber and Otteman for nearly 12 years. Shirley put her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ first in her life and reflected that faith in her everyday life. She deeply loved her family, always putting them and others before her own needs. She demonstrated a modest servant attitude, never wanting to bring attention to herself. All who were guests in her home were treated with warm hospitality and plenty to eat, which included such favorites as her potato salad, meatloaf and brownies. She did enjoy and was a very talented seamstress making several "matching" outfits for the kids when they were little. Before her illness, she thoroughly enjoyed needlepoint, word searches, soap operas and cats. She loved being a grandmother and adored her grandchildren with all her heart. Even though her illness robbed her of emotions, her face would light up whenever her grandchildren were present.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Dr. Allan (Susan) Erickson of Omaha, NE, Keith (Maribeth) Erickson of Wall Lake, IA, Marilyn (Steve) Smith of Urbandale, IA, and Janet (Art) Wakefield of Parker, CO; grandchildren: Kari (Matt) Rhiner, Nick (Dawn) Erickson, Jamie and Andrew Erickson, Hannah, Samantha and Max Smith, and Anna Wakefield; great-grandchildren: Madeline Erickson and Jordan and Jasmyn Rhiner; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Roland in 2008, her parents Albert and Rosina, and her brother Leroy Nuetzman.
