  1. Is that all you want. An 8% raise and an insurance increase paid by tax payers. Most of us are getting 0% or the most a 2% raise. Next you will be wanting 15 weeks vacation. Oh wait, you already get 15 weeks vacation.

  2. Have these people been living in a vacuum? I have lost all respect for these people. This is way out of line. This is just one more example why unions should be dissolved. They no longer serve a purpose.

  3. I understand that this is an initial bargaining position and they do not expect to receive such a substantial raise, however I find it insulting that the union would ask for such an incredible bump, when instead they should be thankful that they have a job at all.

  4. I am not a teacher nor am I employed by any school system. Nevertheless, the headline may be a bit mis-leading. 8% is the total package, including insurance. With current insurance cost increases for some plans, an 8% package increase could potentially lead to minimal or no salary increase. The request stipulated that the teachers' association did not know insurance costs at this time, and therefore the request. What the implication is for salary is yet to be determined.

  5. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Considering their impact on society, teachers need to be rewarded and among the highest paid in the community.

  6. Employees who work for governments should have to pay 50% of the cost of their insurance out of their own pocket. This would encourage them to keep costs low using preventative measures. No more fully funded insurance plans paid by taxpayers.

  7. With allowable growth at 0% for the next two years and an 8% increase in personnel costs, it is going to be a fiscal mess. Property taxes will be going up.

  10. FROM FACEBOOK:

  11. A teacher's salary should be just like any other job and based on performance. They should get reviews and raises where deserved. Not just because "it's time". You want more than peanuts? Work for it, prove you are worth it. You don't walk into any other job and start throwing down requests.

  12. I wish the QUALITY of some our teachers were worth it.

    You said:
"You don't walk into any other job and start throwing down requests."

    and

    "Not just because "it's time"."

I think if you ever said this directly to the face of a union member, they would look at you like you were from another planet.

Throwing down requests and getting raises just because it's time is exactly how this works, regardless of merit. The collective has protected itself from being judged individually. If you want to keep the great teachers, you have to keep piece of crap teachers.

My question is, why do the great teachers voluntarily contribute to the lower of standards of public schooling by protecting the god-awful teacher? Why aren't they speaking up?

  14. Maybe it has to do with who determines who is a good teacher or not. Evaluation process, maybe?
