Passed Away - Marion "Marty" Marten


Marion "Marty" Marten, age 78, of Battle Creek, Iowa, died Monday, December 27, 2010, at Willow Dale Wellness Village in Battle Creek.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 31, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Kevin Freese will officiate. Visitation with the family present will be held at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Battle Creek on Thursday from 5-7 p.m.

Born August 2, 1932, at home near Auburn, Iowa, Marion John "Marty" Marten was the son of Herman and Mamie Marten. Marty was raised by Orville and Bernice Kent when his mother died after his birth. He grew up and received his education in Auburn, graduating from Auburn High School.

Marty met his future wife, Verna Mae Schleisman, at Lake City Roller Rink. On June 24, 1958, they were married in Churdan, Iowa. They were blessed with four children, Suzanne, Andy, Marty, and Lane.

Marty attended meat cutting school in Sioux City, then worked in the meat department of several area grocery stores. He had several hobbies, including fishing, bowling, hunting, mowing lawns, playing cards, and baking cookies for friends and customers. He especially enjoyed spending time with family, grandchildren, and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Verna; four children, Suzanne (Jim) Penn of Wayne, NE, Andy Marten of Battle Creek, Marty (Colleen) Marten of Denison, and Lane Marten of Battle Creek; five grandchildren, Kelli (Nate) Beaty of Wayne, NE, Jason Marten of Wisconsin, Steven Marten of Nebraska, Collin Marten of Ames, and Kristin Marten of Denison; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Shayann; and a sister, Maxine (Lawrence) Sauke of Los Angeles, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; foster parents; and two sisters, Alice Hudgins, and Grace Steele.
