Sac City Planning and Zoning unsure of role
by Curtis Bloes
SAC CITY, IOWA - AUGUST 31, 2010
At the August 31, 2010 Sac City Planning and Zoning meeting, the members of the board discussed the possibility of assuming more of an advisory role and perhaps no longer taking an active role in zoning enforcement.
Right now the SCP&Z approves building permits directly. They also make determinations and direct the city zoning officer in matters that fall under the city’s building abandonment codes. In Sac County it is unusual for P&Z boards to deal with these issues independently.
Often the turnover by the Sac City council of P&Z decisions are politically motivated. This situation has cause friction between the two boards and on a number of occasions has left the P&Z board holding the bag on unpopular decisions.
SCP&Z are appointed by majority roll call vote of the Sac City council.
