Passed Away - Richard Mahlon (Dick) Wadsley






Richard Mahlon (Dick) Wadsley, age 86, of Early, Iowa, died at his home on Thursday, September 9, 2010.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Early, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend DeeAnn Klapp will officiate, with burial to follow in Early Union Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Merton V. Hair Post No. 325 of the American Legion. The family will receive friends at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Sac City on Monday from 5-8 p.m.

Born July 17, 1924, at the home farm north of Early, Iowa, Richard was the son of Merle and Helen (Cunningham) Wadsley. He graduated from Early High School, then attended Iowa State University. Richard was drafted into the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper during World War II.

Richard returned to Iowa following the service where he engaged in farming near Early. On November 4, 1951, he married Rose Lee Eldridge in Lake View, Iowa. The couple was blessed with six children, Rachel, Rebecca, Richard, Rodney, Robert, and Roberta.

Richard was a member of the United Methodist Church in Early. He enjoyed attending auto races, car shows and concerts. He shared his musical talent by singing with the Chautauqua Singers and also performed in various productions of community theatre.

Survivors include four children, Rebecca Strange of Maricopa, AZ, Rodney Wadsley of Early, Robert (Barbara) Wadsley of Linn Grove, and Roberta (Gregory) Hudson of Chillicothe, IL; ten grandchildren, Matthew and Anathea Strange, Nicole (Wadsley) Schroeder, Nathan Wadsley, Alexander Wadsley, Alex and David Tellefsen, and Andrew, Nicholas, and Benjamin Hudson; two great-grandchildren, Blaine and Emma; a sister, Betty Jo Miller of Lawrence, KS; and many other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rachel Wadsley; his parents; his wife in 2003; a son, Richard Wadsley; a sister, Arla Clyatt; and a brother, Ivan Wadsley.
