Out of town Howard Center customers costing Sac City taxpayers
SAC CITY, IOWA – JUNE 14, 2010
1. According to Council person Nick Frohardt, Sac County owns part of the Howard Activity Center building and the recycling equipment inside. There is a portion that is paid every month for what Frohardt describes as “opportunity costs.”
2. It costs a lot of money to have a recycling program, and Sac City is on the short end of the stick because, the other towns are bringing in recycling to the Howard Center that is actually garbage. Sac City then picks up those other town’s garbage at the Howard Center and the residents of Sac City pick up those tipping fees at the landfill.
- The amount of garbage Sac City is hauling and paying for can be measured in tons.
3. Jim Frederick suggested that as the recycling is sorted, the waste could be separated into a special container and other municipalities could be asked to come pick their waste up.
